egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Were you able to clear the vent though? Pasting up is something you don't want happening to any chicken, as the vent needs to be open to eliminate. Good luck, and go Rosie!

i was able to clear it some. she still is pooping but it definitely needs to come off. i just didnt want to do it while it was so close to bedtime.

yes but there is poop stuck to her vent. i picked alot off today but there is still some there. she can poop but not like she needs to i dont think. well i know she cant. when i got some of it off this morning i could tell she felt so much better. then as the day went on she didnt seem to feel as great. so i put some more oil on her and picked a little more. i want to be careful and not hurt her prolapse stuf thats been going on. but i definitely will have to get all that off tomorrow. i didnt think it would be a good idea to go to work on that so close to her bedtime. or should i have went ahead and done it? think it will be ok til morning. she can poop but not like she should i guess.

Whoa just read through this entire thread! You've had a pretty crazy time!!!

I've had birds my entire life, and one major thing I learned was that they DO NOT do well with anesthesia. I lost a cockatoo who developed a tumor on his stomach, we decided to go ahead with letting our vet operate to remove it. The vet warned us that the anesthesia alone could kill him because of birds' fragile respiratory systems, but we decided we had to try before putting him down. Turns out the tumor had already taken over his organs, there was no chance of survival. Our vet is one of the top vets in the state, so we knew it wasn't her lack of skill. Soooo that's probably why the U of Tennessee probably told you it was risky.

Also, you might want to invest in a good book or two for dealing with chickens. The forum here is a great resource, but we're not all trained professionals -- so take the time to get information from trained & educated resources when it comes to caring for your flock, especially during these emergencies. I would hate for you to follow bad advice (but said with good intention!) and lose your hen! I'm so glad you took Rosey to the vet before trying to operate by yourself.

I hope she improves quickly & you never have to go through this ordeal again!!!

Maybe you can take her to a bird vet or a farm vet? They will know what to do.

She's already been a couple times hun. Now just waiting on last little surgery stitches to be removed, and see what her long term prognosis might be.

the3ofus+oursixchicks :

would it be ok to wait and get the poop off in the morning? since she can still poop

They poop a lot when they're sleeping... it's a risk. Every time she poops, more will build up. If it's mostly clean, I would leave her until morning... but from now on keep it as clean as possible, give her a warm soak to lossen it up.

i plan to do that in the morning if she will sit in the water. or at least with a warm wet cloth and pick yeah for me

but its worth it cause i love her so much!!! yes she is still able to poop some. well its 2 am here only round 5- 6 hrs til we rise and shine. when the egg was stuck one vet said keep her in dark and quiet til morning, i said wont she die she said no we have had people to bring in birds that were egg bound for 3 days. so she should be ok ya think?

Long as she can still poop she's ok. Just soak that bottom in warm water like you planned. Sometimes it takes a lot of soaking to get stuff off but it will come off. And you don't really need to use any soap. The warm water soak will probably do her little bottom some good anyway.

Just ignore when people post solutions that haven't read the thread and where you've taken her to the vet twice already. And hugs to you and Rosie!
