Egg Laying !!! Now that i went from Scratch Grains to the flock grow .

If you feed them layer feed, you don't need extra calcium because it's already in the layer feed.

If you can't afford to properly feed all your chickens you should sell some of the chickens or sell their eggs to pay for the proper feed.

Some chickens need more calcium than others. It won't hurt to have extra oyster shell in a separate dish. The layers will eat it if they need to.

I use the Purina Flock Raiser because it has more protein than layena. My flock are healthy and happy. And the shells are nice and hard.
I see them pecking at the oyster shell too.

Have fun with your flock!!

This was not very nice. Chickens have never been known as a rich man's pet

Some people may have to sell the eggs to pay for their children's clothes or who knows what. She is feeding her chickens just fine, chickens have survived for a long time without commercial laying feed. She was here looking for advice on feeding her birds, not how she should manage her life.

OP: Oyster shell should cost about $5 per year, it's cheap and will make a big difference with your hen's eggs. Layer feed also isn't much more expensive than raiser or starter, in fact it is cheaper here. Good luck with your birds!

I know what it's like to run out of feed and have no money for more. Last week for 2 days I was raiding the pantry and cooking up rice, beans, cracked wheat and corn meal.

If you want to use the egg shells...dry them in the oven for a little while then smash them up pretty small and add them to the feed. This way they won't figure out what they are eating and try a whole one!
