I guess I haven't eaten enough yet to figure out the better taste/homegrown thing.
Made a batch of french toast from SQ Silkie eggs and 1 guinea.
They were small size eggs, with rich yellow yolks.
The shells were a lot thicker than store bought, too.
My friend GAVE me the dozen as I just got my chicks and she's had hers for 2 years now. I've never even thought to ask for eggs and she doesn't have a sign out for selling them.
I have 6 eggs left, the ameraucana/EE pen that is not show quality and the eggs are green and brown, but med to large.
The whites were also thicker and not as runny as store bought.
I figure on asking her for a dozen next time and giving her $2 or $3 or more of my handmade soap. She LOVES my soap, but never offers to buy any of it. Go figure.
But I'm thinking $2-$3 to secure my dozen extras a week!
But I've never HEARD of farm eggs going for less than $2 around here and in the store, they are close to that every week, too.
Price of feed around here and a low laying rate of 120 eggs would mean feed alone cost $ 3.50-$4 a dozen! So they must have high layers to sell at $2 a dozen. What about everything else you spend on those chickens and the lights to get them to lay in the winter and the egg cartons?
So how much does he want to sell 'dressed' chickens for? Of course, you are going to let him do the butchering, the gutting, and the plucking!
