Egg prices and DH's oppinion UHG

I guess I haven't eaten enough yet to figure out the better taste/homegrown thing.

Made a batch of french toast from SQ Silkie eggs and 1 guinea.

They were small size eggs, with rich yellow yolks.

The shells were a lot thicker than store bought, too.

My friend GAVE me the dozen as I just got my chicks and she's had hers for 2 years now. I've never even thought to ask for eggs and she doesn't have a sign out for selling them.

I have 6 eggs left, the ameraucana/EE pen that is not show quality and the eggs are green and brown, but med to large.

The whites were also thicker and not as runny as store bought.

I figure on asking her for a dozen next time and giving her $2 or $3 or more of my handmade soap. She LOVES my soap, but never offers to buy any of it. Go figure.

But I'm thinking $2-$3 to secure my dozen extras a week!

But I've never HEARD of farm eggs going for less than $2 around here and in the store, they are close to that every week, too.

Price of feed around here and a low laying rate of 120 eggs would mean feed alone cost $ 3.50-$4 a dozen! So they must have high layers to sell at $2 a dozen. What about everything else you spend on those chickens and the lights to get them to lay in the winter and the egg cartons?

So how much does he want to sell 'dressed' chickens for? Of course, you are going to let him do the butchering, the gutting, and the plucking!

He may be like me, very reluctant to mix business and personal lives. Every time I have tried selling eggs to a crowd of co-workers it has eventually gone south. Some won't pay on time and need to be "reminded", some will pay and then leave the fresh eggs in the work refrigerator until they have a zillion cartons there. I have a friend who makes custom handbags- she's had the same experience and will no longer even offer them to co-workers.

It may be a lot easier for you both if you sell them elsewhere for a better price and keep him out of the loop. Best of luck to you!

I've been selling my eggs to friends and locals for a few weeks now. Most people don't mind paying $3 a dozen....they love the farm fresh taste. Anyone who says there isn't a difference, doesn't have working taste buds.

One customers wife asked him why he paid $3 when she can get them for $1.50 at Costco and he told her because they taste better and would rather know where they come from, she didn't argue. I get all my sales by word of mouth, haven't had to put a sign up yet.

Charge what you want, there are plenty of people who will appreciate your eggs. If hubby can't get over it, don't let him sell. Just tell him you have orders and not enough eggs for his co-workers.

Well I never asked him to sell my eggs for me. Him and a coworker were talking and he mentioned that I raise chickens for eggs and sell them and she said she might be interested in buying some and she asked how much. He didn't even know so he came home and asked me and then told me that was too much. However I have talked to him now and he understands my point about the labor and not just the feed cost but the cost of a heat lamp in winter to extend the laying times and water they drink and the egg cartons. We only use recycled egg cartons for our family use not for selling.

My 10 yr old loves selling eggs! The extra 10 bucks for her helping me with the flock of 20 helps! We sold ours for 2.00 for 2 years until the feed went up recently now we sell for 3.00! My grandpa alway gave us 3.00 because My DD was in charge though I just never knew it until recently as he told her keep 2 and give your mom one! The cat came out of the bag when I told her the price had to go up due to the feed cost!

Well I agree $2 is nothing. The cost of feed is rediculous. I sell mine with store cartons. I ask they return the cartons for the next dozen of eggs and they often bring more if they've had to buy some inbetween mine. I dont have enough chickens to supply this small town of mine. When feed was cheap there was a guy selling at our church for 1.50 and there was never any left. You all will think I'm crazy but I only sell mine for $1 and here is why. Our town is filled with little ol ladies who grew up on farms and now are on fixed incomes. They really want fresh eggs like they used to have. Buying them at the store is costly for them and many do not have cars anymore. They live in retirement communities and such. All go to my church. I charge $1 and ask for the cartons back. I made a list of names and just go down the list as I get eggs. They pay me the money but I tithe it to the church anyway. Some of them can no longer make it to church so I figure they would tithe at least the $1. God has blessed me so much by allowing me to stay home, our family can live on one income, blessed me by allowing me to buy the feed and take care of my girls, to buy more chicks, and to have a huge garden to feed our family and my girls to cut feed cost. The least I can do is supply these precious older ladies with eggs and give the money back to him.

That's great! It's wonderful to hear how other believers are giving back to the community and to the Lord. Keep up the good work!

At the fancy farmers market I've seen them go for $6.00 a dozen. Supposedly organic, but who knows.

What is your hubby's problem anyway, maybe his panties are in a bunch because you are making money.

$1.25 a dozen for homegrown eggs? That's giving them away. Out here they go for $3-$4 a dozen for farm fresh. Are people not in the know yet about how much nicer home grown eggs are? Hm. Perplexing....
