Egg recall for salmonella! YIKES

I think the easiest way to protect your flock is don't feed them garbage. Fresh table scraps are ok but not when it's layin in the yard waiting for the birds to find them. It all comes down to that rare commodity, common sense. Even commercial feed that has gotten wet or moldy may contibute.

If people fully cooked their store bought eggs, they should be fine. Now I sure wouldn't ever eat a raw store egg, but a raw farm egg has a hundred fold lower chance of salmonella.

I am not sick, nor have I ever had a problem with salmonella but I do love batter and dough both containing raw eggs. Love licking the spoon or the beater!

Hmmmmmmmmm.........couldn't possibly be any kind of issue of how "factory-farmed" battery-cage hens are kept, raised, housed, stressed, etc.etc.etc., not could it?!?!?!
"Factory-farming" of sentient beings is sooooooooo wrong on sooooooooo many levels!
My organic, free-range, happy hens are just FINE.....as are their eggs!!!!!!!!
Why don't they mention THAT in the articles about the recall?!?!?!?!

Sorry for the ignorant question (im very very new to chickens), what do u mean by battery caged hens?? Silly me, first thing that popped into my head was a cage made from duracell/ energizer batteries, like bars for a cell!! lol

Battery-cages are how 99% of big agri-business, or 'factory-farmed' chickens are kept, in amazingly cruel confinement their entire lives!
In mega barns........with hundreds of thousands (!) of hens crammed into small battery cages.........where they have less than 6 x 7 INCHES of space to "live" their entire lives; and endure horrific
conditions, unable to express normal chicken behaviors such as flapping their winds, dust-bathing, fresh air, sunshine, etc., etc., etc.......
Jeez............google 'factory farming'.....or 'battery caged hens'.....or watch the movie 'Food, Inc'.......or better yet watch 'Fowl Play'......and witness what big agri-business has done, and is doing to
living, breathing, feeling creatures................all in the name of profit!!
It's heart-breaking, and disgusting, and just so WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!
It's part of the reason why I am a vegetarian, and have happy, free-range chickens!

Here's more information. Read down a little ways and it talks about the presence of salmonella in birds in general. I suppose we could all be at risk some time or other even from our own birds, but like this article implies most illness is contracted by people in restaurants eating "pooled" eggs, or eggs that are mingled with other eggs in mass preparations.

WRONG WRONG WRONG

Supplemental hormones (growth, sexual, or otherwise) are NOT used in the production of Chicken, Pork, or Eggs.

+1

It is the misrepresentation of labeling that says "no hormones added" when legally, they cannot be added anyways!

Salmonella can get inside a hen the same way people can get yeast infections.

If there's a way in and the host is favorable/immuno-compromised in some way, it can get in. Most cases it is on the outside and contaminates the inside when the egg is inevitably opened to get the goods inside.
