Egg severely cracked on day 20/21, help!

Personally, I would peel of some pieces of shell near each end, mainly searching for the bill to make sure the duckling has air to breathe, and also the other end should have the yolk sac. See how much is left to absorb. Coat any membrane exposed and look for heavy veins. It looks almost ready to hatch to me.

If you use some type of homemade thing to try to wait it out, temp too low is better than temp too high at this point.

Congrats!

Overheating is a concern, and I lost one of the eggs in my experiment from it. Did you read the assisted hatching article?
Yes, sorry it took so long to respond. I ended up staying up until 2am and setting my alarm for 5:30 to reset the heating pad. Babe is still alive, eyes aren’t open but no yolk sac, no blood vessels. Tiny umbilical string. Just appears to be sleepy. I ended up grabbing an outdoor thermometer and placing it in the Bator to keep an eye on humidity and temp.

Thanks for the input. I did this after watching numerous vids last night. No yolk sac, no large vessels. Only has a tiny little umbilical string, and the eyes are still shut. Temp is around 95, that’s as high as I could get it to. Little bugger still chirping here and there!

Oh my gosh!! Just as I was going through all the missed replies, babe started chirping loudly and the eyes opened! So exciting. I think it has a chance. THANK YOU ALL!!

Okay, so once little puff dries up and appears to be A-OK can I place back with mom? She still has one more egg under her that hasn’t yet pipped, and the first hatchling is doing great. She’s being a really good mom, and I think it was an accident that this egg got smushed/cracked.

Yay!! :ya
If she allows you close to her, you can sneak the duckling under her rear, hide it in your hand, and just stick it under her. Usually they will accept them, especially if they don’t see them first. But keep a watch out anyway to make sure she doesn’t peck at it.

She does allow me near, very friendly and doesn’t yell at me. I’ve set up a camera in there and have watched her yell at the other girls when they come in to see her. She doesn’t do that with me, hopefully she’ll let me place it without issue.

One more question, there is a tiny bit of gooey stuff on the rear end. Should I give electrolyte water? Wait for this to absorb before placing it in the coop? I’ll snag a photo shortly.

Lucky you! Many broodies are mean! Lol

That should dry up and fall off soon. You can dab a little neosporin if you want.

I can’t tell how much is attached, but when it gets to just a tiny thread, you can clip it about an inch away from the belly. Keep it on that soft towel until it’s moving around and the belly heals up. Outside it would be more susceptible to infection.
