Egg Song?? Egg Squat??

The egg song is great. You'll definatly know it when you hear it.

In my limited experience - all 21 weeks of it - the egg squat is usually occurs when someone or a roo approaches the hen and she squats or lowers herself close to the ground and spread her wings just a little bit. My EE hens lift their butts too but my BO's do not.

The egg song is the song everyone associates with a chicken. It's difficult to type it out - phonetically. It's not the crow that roos have but it's the cluck cluck cluck sound you hear in commercials and on the TV. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to ya.

I asked the same question about a week ago and now I've experienced both with two of my pullets who are now laying.

Egg song...

Bawk, Bawk, Bawk, Bugawwwwwwk!!!

The squat is when you reach out to pet the chicken, sometimes just walking near the chicken they lower themselves (squatting) to the ground and lift their wings up away from their sides slightly...not spread like in flight... and if you pet them, a little rough they seem to like, they will get up afterward, puff up and shake it off.

Each of my Golden Comets began to lay exactly one week from their first squat and one day after really showing interest in their nest boxes...they sit in them and move around the shavings or hay...whatever is in there...to their liking.

okay I get what y'all are saying about the squatting thing. my older girls do it when I go to pet them, and they are too slow to get away. that is a submissive thing too right?? I need to go watch them and see if the younger girls are starting to do it too

Yep, the squat is the same move they do when the rooster comes over to do his thing. Usually the rooster jumps on and then the hen squats, but I've seen a hen walk up in front of the roo and squat down for him (hey, big boy, come take care of me, wink wink) The whole process is amazingly quick.

I wonder if the egg song is the same for different breeds? I have buff orps. Will they make the same song or is it different for each breed?
