My BS just started laying on the 4th of July. Being a talkative chicken I expected an interesting egg song. Yesterday I disturbed her on the nest during feeding. She went back in, so I waited for her song on the porch. She came out of the coop let out 1 short Braaagh and went about her business. She made me laugh, I was expecting more.

LOL Today she came out and was making a fuss. I think she was saying to her sisters, "you are never gonna believe what just happened to me".

I haven't heard the egg song either. The coop is about 40 feet from the house. I think it's one of my Golden Sex Link gals that is producing. She's about 17 weeks, maybe 18 if she was a holdover at the store. Anyway, she gave me four small hard shell eggs four days in a row. Then today she left a soft shell one under the roost. Embarrassing story: so I thought I'd cook it and feed it back. I stuck it in the microwave in a cup of water, and after the explosion the microwave door was blown open and two hours of cleaning ensued. Well, maybe not that long, but it was everywhere!

Holy Moley, sounds like a real mess. Sorry about that. Maybe next time try the stove. Good luck with your flock. I never tried cooking an egg in the microwave but maybe its not a great idea.

Sounds like your little hens need some oyster shells to ensure that the shells are getting the protein that they need

Haha! I decided to put a couple of nesting boxes out in their run today and used old milk crates with some straw. Still no egg, as of today but lots of squatting and interest in the interior nesting boxes. My older RIR (the one mentioned in this OP) was inside one of the crates, rearranging the straw while the others watched her. I had one of the fake eggs I wanted to put in one of the crates so, as she was moving straw I quietly slipping it in the crate and underneath her. Well, she and 2 others starting singing the egg song LOUDLY! It was hilarious! <3

Yay!!! We got our first egg today! It was so hot, my poor hen! No egg song though. She was completely quiet!

Woo hoo!!!! My first hen used to sing it after every egg, and now she never does. She's 3 and stopped singing about a year and a half ago. My 2 year old sings occasionally.
