Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

This is funny, well, my only layer, of 3 eggs started eating like she's never ate before.  I gave her kale, then her sister came up and couldn't get enough.  My other chicks weren't interested.  I think our second layer will be the sister to our first layer. It's a homone thing just like us gals.

Keep you posted, if this is a sign of eating greens, then I'll let yu know.

@tntchix i think we would have had a golden as well. we originally purchased 2 bantams... Vespa passed at only a few days old :'( she was by far the smallest and weakest chick... maybe next year when we get more chickens (i understand chicken math better than anything they ever taught in school!) we will get more sebrights... i do enjoy our Moneypenny very much ... our others are more affectionate, but they don't have the personality that the sebrights do... your goldens are beautiful!!!! thank you for sharing them!!!!

I'm sorry about Vespa. You are so right about personality. Loudmouth walks around like he is the biggest, baddest thing on the property.

My other chicks are his size now.

After weeks of the egg song and no eggs, a few days ago she started to squat. Today I heard the egg song... Didn't rush thinking she was crying wolf again. And found my first egg!! Miss Dot is 20 weeks old

Yay... how awesome! Im getting excited too because I was just given a new two yr old sexlink hen that already lays but hasnt since we brought her home (only been two days today) AND my roo (the same age as my pullet I was given about a month ago) started crowing today!!!! Do yall think that means shes almost of age too? Eggs glorious eggs!!! Im so excited I may start singing the egg song soon myself lol, and also I agree chicken math is easy they should have taught us this instead!

Anyone have any ideas or experience when a hen is rehomed how long it may take before she gets comfy enough to lay again? Also how old do u think the babies need to get before integrating them with the older chickens?

Did you separate the two new roo and hen, if you have other hens, or did you just put them in with the others?

On your first question, I've had new hens lay the very next day... or wait a few before laying. Depends on the hen and the flock, I guess.

Ok I started with two roos and a hen recently (butch is on his way out tho hes mean and pushy) then I got 4 chicks all supposed to be girls and pretty close in age THEN day b4 yesterday I got the new tractor and a 2 yr old hen so the first three came together I didnt know what to do when the new sexlink hen came into the picture be ause im not experienced so I put her in with the older chickens but when the mean roo started messin with her right away I took her back out... then I still didnt know what I was doing so I tried putting the chicks in with her alone instead (still had no clue what I was doing) anyways she has no prob. With the babies so thats where they set my newest a sexlink (we named her ella) is in the tractor with the babies and the other three are in the pen under my por h still... im thinking when the chicks are big enough I will add the roo that im keeping (fred) and lucy in with ella and the chicks.. whew thats a lot to type on this little bitty keypad on my phone but my comp. Is temp down so yall bare with me here.... anyways do yall think it might be ok to do it backwards that way putting the bigs in with the littles once they are bigger? How big should they be? I honestly think once butch is gone fred and lucy will calm down and behave better... butch is kind of an instigator you can just tell

I really don't know what to tell you. I just was wondering myself about introducing new birds. Most of the threads say to separate for awhile allowing them to see each other. But, you could experment going backwards if you are around to supervise. If you're not there I would keep them separate. That's what I would do. I have 5 hens that are buddies, so I'm not thinking of adding newbie's yet.
