Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Yummm lasagna. .. im so ready for my other two to start laying also and for melody to get regular the extra food around here would really help..

So after finding melodys 3 eggs in the dog house and all the work I did closing off the dog house and putting in nesting boxes she skipped a day and then laid yesterday (where she was supposed too...Yay!) Then skipped today... is that common? Im not upset just wondering and ready for my other two girls to start laying so I can have my steady stream of eggs.. FINALLY! Lol better start quick cuz the hubby is getting thin patience paying for feed for so many "not laying" birds. I however am just finally happy to see progress among the flock

don't worry, that's normal. My one EE, when she was fiat starting had no rhythm to her laying. She'd lay one day then skip 2 then lay a couple days then skip a couple lol

thats good to know.... question.... is it important to always leave an egg in the box so she will keep laying there?

maybe at first (I'm still new to this too lol). I have plastic easter eggs in mine that are filed with rocks (for weight) and glued shut. They always roll them under themselves as they wait for their own eggs to come out. But, they broke one of the plastic eggs open so I took it out. I have 1 hen who lays in that empty nest every day. I think they're just important until they know that's where eggs go.

So I free ranged my older chickens for the first time yesterday!!!! In my halfway fenced in town small back yard 1/4 to 1/2 acre maybe, Not for very long. I let them out about 30 mins before dusk and watchedthem closely and "hearded them" with my 11yr old daughter Brooklyn where about we wanted them to stay... away from the neighbors yards full of cats and dogs. It wasnt as bad or as hard as we thought getting them back in their coop/run. Im was excited about this because these are all game chickens who even tho we spend lots of time around and have been here for months didnt live here as babies and dont care for people much... actually they would prolly prefer we leave them alone lol anyway, I know they wont stay closebon their own so they wont be getting much "free run range time" but even being able to let them out for 30 mins a day will make me happy, when my young ones (who we started free ranging a few weeks ago) are very well behaved they stay close to their tractor for the most part and the back yard seems more than plenty of run around space for them and they now get let out quite often (with supervision of course). Yep we are learning more and more and chicken tv is pretty awesome lol im glad out of my four daughters (all who like having chickens) Brook has taken a real interest and loves to help do chicken chores and just sit back and watch with me, it is now somthing we bond over

See I thought about doing the plastic egg thing but then I thought about the colors and if my chickens would be that stupid or be like "ur crazy lady what the hell" lol melody is obviously got it figured out but ive been leaving one behind in hopes my two other pullets see them and would be jelous and start laying as well

Remember, too, that during winter months hens slow down on laying as days are much shorter....eek!

Yes I have researched it quite a bit and have already started lengthening their days gradually with christmas lights we have set up in the coop in hopes of increasing egg production being as all 3 of my game pullets are just now about old enough to finally start laying

You do realize that you are running a high risk of fire in your coop using those xmas lights? They can possibly short out, not worth the risk of a fire for an egg. Besides, I think they deserve a rest during those months...
