The suspense is killing me but I did find my BSL,who I believe will be the first to lay since she has a nice fat bright red comb and flappy waddles, in the nest box last night and I almost had a heartattack I was so excited. Still didn't lay but at least she is familiarizing herself with the right place.

bok....bok....bok....bok...bok..bok..bok.bok.bok....ba-GAWK....BOK....BA-GAWK!!!

Repeat for about 3 minutes.

LOL, thank you! I thought that might be it. I heard her doing that last night when they all headed into the coop for the night.

It's not exactly a song, and i don't know why people call it that. You may have noticed that after a chicken lays an egg she will cackle for a while afterwards. It sounds like:

"BAWK BAWK BAWK BAWK BUH-KAWK!!!! BAWK BAWK BAWK BAWK BUH-KAWK!!... repeat repeat repeat...

It gives one the impression that the hen has just gone through a very distressing ordeal. I seriously don't know what put it into their heads to call it a "song".

Actually, chickens make noise also before they lay the egg. This one is actually slighty more of a song:

"WAAAAAAA-WA-WA-WA-WA-WA-WA-WA" (the "wa-wa's" go on for a while) and then it continues: "WAAAAAAA-WA-WA-WA-WA... et cetera"

I have one hen that sounds exactly like a crying human baby. Freaked me out until I figured out where/who it was coming from.
