Yes, it could disturb the neighbors, depending how close they are.
Some hens are louder than others. But the loud ones are LOUD!

Hi there,
Well, today, around 2.00, one of my 17-week-old red sexlink girls started bawking, and yes, it was loud enough that I went out to see what all the racket was about. She just stood there and bawked for awhile and then disappeared. A short while later I went to check on her and Halleluja there was our first egg! Maybe at first they make more noise because they're not sure what's happening. And maybe not all pullets will sound off, but the event is not long enough to really be bothersome. The result is just marvelous!. Hope you find that first egg soon.

I have one that is really LOUD. I have put her up for sale on Craigslist. The only problem is that I put fingernail polish on her toenails so I could tell her apart from the others and then everyone pecked the polish off. What is a good way to mark a bird that the others won't zoom in on?

I worried about offending the neighbors, too, the first time I heard it. It was sooooooo loud, I thought a racoon got into the pen, or something.

But, after a couple days of laying, they stopped doing it. They just quietly go up to their nest-box, lay the egg, rest, and come back down.

So far. Only three of the five have started laying.
