I have been watching for my 21 week old girls to start laying eggs. Hadn't checked the nesting boxes in about two days. Noticed one of the RIR wasn't out in the run with the others, so I looked in the nesting boxes, and there she was, giving me an egg.

Then I see another egg in another box, and it is STANDING UP ON END. I had to run get the camera for this, otherwise who would believe me.

I finally retrieved the egg to examine it, and here is what I found. Still don't understand exactly how it happened, but thought it was pretty funny!

That happened to us a couple of times! We had hay in the boxes at first and they would get in and scratch around leaving a bare spot. When they would finally lay the egg, it would land on the wood and BAM!! a hole.....Tho we never had one stand on end;)
We started putting pine pellets and they have a harder time clearing out a spot now, so no more holey eggs!
