egg thief caught in the act!

Priceless picture!!!
I have plenty of dogs that bite very hard, but still treat a raw egg as if it is fragile.

Strange instinct.

Love the picture! She has that
"What? Oh no - mom! I'm in SO much troubleeeeeeee." look too funny.

Yes bird hunting dogs have got to have a gentle soft bite or else they'll tear apart the pheasant or duck they're supposed to bring back. You dont want a bird full of teeth holes and bleeding all over the feathering and the dog because they bit down after their retrieval nor do you want a chewer/shredder because..then the carcass they retrieved is useless.

I have a shepherd chow mix who is hyperactive the the core, she's climbed and jumped a tree before and shattered a leg once - she jumps like a kangaroo and needs ritlin like BADLY, but give her a whole egg, and she'll play with it tote it around, like it, nibble it, everything but won't break it. You'd have to break it for her before you'd actually eat it. Dogs are so strange.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It's comforting to know others have dealt with an egg-thieving dog, LOL! We also have an 8-y/o German shorthaired pointer, Ace, and people are surprised that both dogs leave the ducks alone even though they're "bird" dogs. The GSP was trained to hunt before the ducks came along and he just has a way of knowing which animals are part of our "pack" and which ones he can hunt. I just hope Deuce, the puppy, will be interested in the pheasants when she's older and not think of them as feathered friends like the ducks.

We used to have a dog that would find eggs outside the coop. My father was very upset until he learned that the dog wasn't eating the eggs ("only cure for a egg sucking dog is a shotgun") Instead he taught the dog to bring the found eggs to him and trade for a treat. Later that progressed to the dog bringing the eggs to the porch and they would trade when my father came back to the house. I swear that dog could count if he brought 4 eggs to the porch and my father only gave him 3 treats he would stare and give him the 'dog eye' until the account was right. The dog was a great help because we had muscovies and they were always trying to sneak away and establish a secret nest.

Oh no!!!! but the picture is too cute. We put the little chicken house up on legs....keeps out the dogs and gives the birds some shade. Also keeps mice from making a home under the chicken house.
