I had a BCM hatch last night and he was sitting in the egg still looking slimy as could be! When he got himself out of the shell it looked like there was a puddle of egg white in the bottom of the shell. I never saw this before! Yes, I broke lockdown....last time I had a chick that was covered in something like that he hardened up and even though I bathed him the next day, he didn't make it. So I grabbed this guy out and gave him a warm bath and wiped some of the goo off of him. I dried him a little and put him back into the bator. Added some warm water and humidity was at 60 within a few minutes...65 shortly after. I did remove the egg with the goo in it when I grabbed the baby out. I didn't want the other chick in there somehow spilling it on himself and have two covered in egg white! Ewwwwww He's not as fluffy as the guy that hatched a few minutes before him, but they're both doing good this morning.

Ever see this before? Ever have one all sticky like that live?

This is a great article on problem solving your hatch. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/aa204
The
following was exerpted from the article and seems to fit your situation.

Sign: Sticky chicks; chicks smeared with albumen.
Causes:
Low incubation temperature.
High incubation humidity.
Improper turning. This results in reduced embryonic membrane growth and reduced nutrient absorption.
Old eggs.
Very large eggs.

I have an egg that I candled at day 18 that seemed to have more whites than the others and I will be watching it carefully to see how it hatches.

I had a "sticky-chick" last summer - it down poured for two days straight outside and the ambient humidity in our house skyrocketed to around 70% during the second week of incubation, so the eggs didn't lose enough moisture. One chick came out fine. One came out sticky. One drowned in the shell.

Just make sure your "sticky-chick's" little bum isn't glued shut and his toes aren't glued together and he should be fine. Mine looked pretty rough at first, and now he's a big, mean, healthy cockerel!

Just out of the incubator - I had to give the sticky guy a good scrubbing with a soft, damp cloth (just like you did) just after this was taken:

And the same two guys last week:

So - a sticky chick can develop entirely normally into a beautiful bird. They just need a little extra attention in the beginning. It sounds like you did a great job!

Are they australorps? Their combs look funky... but they are beautiful.

Thanks birdbrain! I did a dry incubation, and I have a turner. Normal size eggs, reputable seller...but of course I don't know, maybe he was an older 'extra'. None of the others from this hatch turned out like that. Just him. Maybe he was in a cold spot? Maybe just a fluke? I will keep that link though, I know I'll refer to it in the future!

Thanks annarie! Those are very handsome roos. I'm hoping my little guy will do as well. He's got his belly all fluffy today, I guess from it rubbing on the bottom as he hops around.

I've gotten a few like this before. I haven't had the guts to bathe them, so I just let them dry and give them a good rubbing. It breaks up the gunk. They look slicked down for a few days, but come out okay. I will wipe eyes and feet, and definitely make sure they can move their joints freely and poop.

I had a BCM like that on my last hatch. The egg white had kind of hardened like those jello squares that don't melt. The chick died. It was encased in that gunk.

They're Bantam Cochins that are possibly mixed with who-knows-what. I won them in a contest held by another user here on BYC, they were out of a newly purchased hen, and he didn't know if she had been kept with any roos before he got her, but he had her with a Blue Cochin Roo. So, momma was definately a Black Cochin. Daddy could be a Blue Cochin (which makes sense since one chick came out black and the other came out blue). They have feathered legs/feet, they're squat and round - and getting more so by the day (they're only 5 months old). I really don't care what they are - they're pets. The picture doesn't really show their type very well, but it was perfect for the before-and-after effect.
