I started out with 7 hens 3 years ago, and have lost 3 of them so far. I have one that is sick right now and looks like she is egg-bound. Are there any good suggestions for helping an egg-bound hen to recover? She is a 3 year old Americauna. I just lost another hen almost 3 weeks ago. I think that one died from heat stroke maybe. I also think one of my others died last year from being egg-bound. I soaked her a couple of times and tried to find the egg that was stuck, but never found it.
This Americauna usually lays shell-less eggs. Most of her eggs are membrane with the yolk inside. A couple of days ago, she laid a good egg. But I think she may have laid just the insides of the egg without the membrane the next day. I am wondering if some of that egg is still inside her. Any help will be appreciated.

Since this bird has a history of soft shelled or shell less eggs then it's probably a reproductive problem. Is she pooping, and what do the droppings look like? An egg bound hen can't pass droppings. She could have an infection if she has egg material that has not passed. There are some virus's that can impact egg laying and cause problems. Reproductive problems are not uncommon in birds over the age of two, and some can have problems earlier.
Is vet care an option for you? They could help narrow it down for you.
In the event this one doesn't make it, I would recommend having her necropsied. That way you will know for sure. Since you've lost more than one it would be good to know. They could be completely unrelated, it happens.

Yes, very true. I don't know about her droppings or if she is still having them. I'll check for that later. Wish I could find a poultry vet around here. You would think that when one lives out in the country, there would be one but I haven't found it yet. Thanks for this information. She did lay an egg (with a shell) a couple of days ago. But I haven't seen anything since I found the liquidy stuff that I think might have been her egg.
