Eggbound Maybe ? Update 1/2/08

I have a hen I found hidding yesterday morning . She didnt look good to me when I picked her up her belly felt rather big. Her bum had some poops on it. I brought her inside and gave her warm baths and put some lube in her vent . I also tryed to feel for the egg and thought maybe I touched it but it didnt feel like a shell. Felt soft like a hard boiled egg! Today I got her some tums and crushed 2 and put them in some eggs. I gave her yogurt and acv in her water. I would rub her belly in a downward motion towards her vent. I have her in the bathroom and I run the shower every hour to keep her warm and moiste. I am unsure if anyone else has had this problem I have some pictures of her so you can see her. She is also making some noise when she breaths every now and again. Her poops look ok sorta xtra stinky. She also stands like a penquin. She also has thick white stuff coming out of her bum!

Update!!! Well my little girl still has not passed an egg. I really think she does not have an egg stuck. Her belly has gone down. She doesnt have the white icky stinky stuff coming out of her bum anymore. She has no trouble with her breathing. She is standing normal. Her comb is somewhat pale that is the worste that I can see going on with her. She is on Sumlet and will stay on that a full 10 days. She is eating yogurt and anything else I put in front of her. She is also drinking. I am prayin she will be fine . Thanks for all your help and support, you are all so wonderful.

Cristina- I'm not much help with egg binding since all of my hens with this problem have, so far, resolved it on their own. I would suggest that you do a search on "egg binding".
I know that I read one recently that sounds alot like yours. It did not end well since the hen became an internal layer, became septic and died. Good luck and I hope the bump will get more knowledge folks to respond.

I have read those posts and I am doing all they have done and I still have not gotten anywhere . She is the same and no egg yet. Her bum is rather icky with white very stinky thick poos on it

. Went to the feed store and only found Duramycin-10. Right now she has Sumlet in her water. I am not sure what one is best and info would be grateful.

Hey Wendy,
It seems like her belly has gone down alot! She still has the icky ,white ,thick ,stinky stuff. She looks good her color is really good she is eating and drinking and walking around as much as she can . ( she is in a rabbit cage its not very big ). But that white stuff smells very very bad and its really thick. ick ick gag.

Put a towel into your micowave and heat it up.. roll it into a sort of nest and allow the bird to sit quietly..

she must not be disturbed by you or anybody at all..
she must not have light .. so cover the container she is in

Leave her sitting like this for 3 hours... unditurbed.. not even peeky booing to check on her

Put some paper towel under the cloth towel and if you find its wet or gooey then she has passed her egg and can be dried off and go outside with the other birds again

If you find she is no longer giving that low burk burk sound... she has passed the egg

If you find the mucky stuff is still coming out .. it means the egg has broken inside her .. and she will need to be kept inside until it has all come out and you clean her up or the other birds will peck at her

How is she now please

Keep her on the antibiotics for the next 5 days..
