Eggs are here :)Paganbirds and MagsC's hatching thread!!UpdateMarch16!

The one in the pic is a black sex link. I have black australorps, too. The BAs have a prettier shine, IMO.
You can't tell in the pic, but that roo has some feathers that are blue/black. It's almost like he's a barred splash rock auracana!
Here's another pic. I can't tell from the thubmnail of the pic, but maybe it shows him off a little better. His name is Derek. (We named him for Derek Zoolander... from the movie.)

ETA: The black on his comb is dirt. I put vaseline on their combs & then they go play in the dirt. The dirt sticks to their combs & looks awful, but at least they don't get dry, frostbitten combs.

Zoolander!!!! My daughter loves that movie so she will certainly get the reference.

Yes, I can see the bluish black on that pic. If he is the dad, between he and Phoenix, you never know what is going to hatch. Thats the beauty of mixed eggs to me. And they all develop their own characters.

Yeah... we had Derek & Hansel. Hansel was our big, beautiful BR guy. He chose to stay out & not get up to roost for the night. So, sadly, we just recently lost him. He froze. He was such a sweetie. I'm hoping to get one of his chicks from this hatch. I have added extra lamps in the barn, but Derek & Spot like to stay near the coop with their ladies, so I'm not too worried about them.
All of my roosters are good guys, but Hansel actually liked attention. I had found him sitting with his head tucked under his wing. I was sad.

I didn't realize he hadn't gone up with the others. (I only counted hens... now I count them all.)

Oh. Sad.

I sure hope you get one of his chicks.
I wonder if chicks inherit more of hens or roosters tempers? If that is the case, fingers crossed

that you get one exactly like him.
I tried candling the olive eggs from sonew123 this evening but they are difficult to tell.

I got one green egg as an extra with one of my swap sets. It's a pullet egg & it's clear.

How do you candle those darker eggs? The olive ones I have are really dark, havent tried the brown ones from you yet. In the past I had a difficult time with those so just left them in. I candled a couple of blues, one I know has veins and other is questionable.

I have the really bright light... so that helps.
Before day 7, I just shine the light around the aircell & look for veining. Around day 8, I start to shine the light into the aircell while (gently) tipping the egg pointy-end-up. I look for veining, an embryo, or movement. After day 11... I just keep track of movement. I have a few darker eggs that I could not see veining in yet. I plan on checking again tonight. If you can see the yolk bobbing around, but no veining around the aircell, it's probably clear. Give them a while, though, since they're dark. Unless they are stink-bombs or obviously clears, I leave them in until day 14 or so.

We tried a couple dark ones tonight(brown and olive) and my daughter said she could see veining? I couldnt but that isnt saying much, lol.
Yep, I dont plan on throwing any out unless its absolutely obvious.

Told you those olive eggs are brutal..Blessed and correct me if Im wrong-got 3 olive eggs-2 hatched and 1 made it to lockdown and pipped? then died:-( She couldnt see in them the whole time...She just left then in and wung it..Which is what I did and all 4/4 hatched...I just started collecting them for my next hatch starting the 5-6th I hope-No blue eggs this time....Amaracaunas-olives-and silkies is all thats going in...I keep all eggs in until at least day 10 if not 14 just in case one is a late bloomer:-) My candler is homade with a 75 what bulb and that sucker allows me to see veining on day 4~

The flashlight I have usually works....I am definitely going to have to invest in a strong flashlight or high power candler!!
Well, if I am trusting my daughters better eyes, we do have veining in at least one of the olive eggs. I have them all kind of separated into what I have candled and what I have not, so will do more tonight. Like I said, I get a bit nervous that I will break one so candle in small numbers.

I think I have created a monster because my daughter wants to candle now more than I have!

Well, I hope my luck is as good as Blesseds!! There are five olive eggs in there (from sonew123)
