I have a duck that just went broody today for the second time in like 3 years but was wondering how long can she go off forraging before they get to cold and die?? I let the ducks out of the pen for the day and she goes out with them, i let her out for about 15 mins and she seemed to have no interest in going back to the nest, so i locked her back in the pen. Am i being overprotective and will she just go back in her own time?? How long can the eggs survive with her gone?? Thanks

My duck will leave the nest for up to half an hour at a time, sometimes a few times a day. Eggs hold heat fairly well especially in warmer conditions like we have here at the moment. 15 minutes isnt long for her to have something to eat and drink, and stretch her legs. Since you arent at school tomorrow, maybe you could let her out a bit longer, watch her for half an hour- she may go back on her own by then, if not you can put her back in. half an hour wont do the eggs any harm.
My only thought is .... Maybe she isnt "copmpletely" broody yet. My duck will sometimes sit for a few hours a day before sitting full time. How many eggs does she have in her nest ? And when you lock her back in the pen- does she go straight back to the nest ?

My scovie girl will jump off her nest for about half an hour 3 days in a row in the arvo, then stay on for about 2 full days. She will eat as much as possible in that amount of time when I let them all out to forage
