Eggtopsy: What happened to my egg? {Graphic Pictures}

Early death happens, quitters, defects. Hope you had some Good eggs hatch out of this set??

Nothing from this batch yet, its day 19 today. The SLBs had significant loss, while the other two breeds in the incubator are going strong, which is why I asked if it could be something flock related or?

I know shipped eggs are a risk, but eggs from the same shipper are doing much better than this lot, I have lost over half of the SLBs to early death. Its disappointing, but as long as I end up with a pair, I will be happy enough.

They should start hatching Wednesday/Thursday (im told by one breeder my Icelandics will likely hatch early) so I will definitely update

Having bred and hatched 1000's and 1000's, I have had problems with my own breeds----problems I would have not even known if I had of not been hatching. Whole pens with most or all infertile eggs. Trying to hold eggs as long as possible to collect as many a I could in that breed can cause a problem too. Many things can cause a problem.

I hatched eggs on a total and complete whim in a still air incubator made from an old roaster. I never, ever expected to make it to lockdown, but i did with 3 eggs. These were 2 of them. Lockdown initially went very badly. I mean very. Humidity jumped to probably 100% because i found out the hard way that my digital thermometer/hygrometer doesnt do fast adjustments. So i had condensation in the whole bator and it was reading 47% humidity. Anyway. These 2 were alive on day 18. Possibly day 19. One hatched on day 21, BEAUTIFULLY i might add.

These two never internally pipped which shouldnt come as any surprise because none of the yolk is absorbed. I do think they had tried to get into position. It was VERY wet inside. The membranes both looked beautiful.

I am thinking i drowned them. Or stress from all the movement and change as i screwed up lockdown.

The incubator was steady as i'll get out. I mean rock solid temperature holding. I know i can get the chicks to day 18, and i have now calibrated a new thermometer and hygrometer, disinfected everything, nd definitely have an idea of what i can do better. If this is drowned chicks, i think i can just go for another try in the same set up.

Membranes looked so good. Nice and pliable and not shrunken around them.

These 2 were alive on day 18. Possibly day 19. One hatched on day 21, BEAUTIFULLY i might add.

These 2 looks more in the 16/18day range. At least you got one. Sure take what you have learned and hatch some more. Good Luck!

Ok cool beans! It is very very likely they died on day 18 during the lockdown transition. This makes me feel a lot more confident about trying again. If they looked like they had made it to day 19 or 20, i wouldnt have been totally sure about what i did wrong. But they they look like they could be early day 18, then i probably know exactly what went wrong and i can learn from that and adjust!

I think i might set some eggs tonight if the calendar looks clear and i'm home for the next few weeks.

I opened 1 egg today with an obvious blood ring. And ive been watch another 1 that has been clear up to today. (Beginning of day 7) it has a red ring that is only around the yolk. My other 6 all have veins and embryo movement. Is this one a blood ring?

I'm sufficiently satisfied with my hatch--seeing as how it's the first successful one I've had. Buuuuuut, just removed 10 eggs earlier today--going into day 5 after hatch day. Randomly, I have 2 that just pipped internally this afternoon.

Every one of them was moving visibly on day 17. In the 10 that I cracked open--I'm willing to bet 9 of them died on day 18 after a logged humidity spike that lasted several hours.
However, one...the membrane was completely full of dark blood. It looked like a buff orpington mix--would've been adorable.

Of the 7 that hatched (so far), 2 died--one had some intestines beading out and the other just seemed to randomly pass.
My question is, would a humidity spike cause survivors to be any more likely to die? Like "long"-term damage. As in hours after hatch....

Oh my gosh!! I just cracked an egg and the baby inside was still alive. I have many posts on the Farm Innovators 4250 forum. It is now beyond the 21 days and I didn't think any of the ones left were alive. I have sooooo much to learn!!

On no! That's my worst fear! How many days late was it? I always start my eggtopsies by putting a whole in the air cell and making sure there is no movement. I'm scared to death of that happening. If it hadn't hatched yet, chances are it wasn't going to. I'm so sorry!
