El Paso Tx looking for local newbies to exchange experiences and knowledge

yes. my boyfriend kills them and we make sure the machete is shape so it goes right through and they dont struggle or suffer at all.
then i pluck them and help him clean them out
and i use the head feet and insides to make a soup for the dogs.
everything gets used except the feathers so that Makes me feel better.

If we eat our chickens, that is the way we will do it. No waste. I saw a couple youtube videos on killing chickens and they make it look so smooth and easy...but while im watching I start getting a little light headed. I cant even kill bugs.

the first couple are the hardest to watch but after that it does get easier.
as long as you force yourself to do it.
both my bf and i are hige animal lovers and even though we do raise some our chucke s for meat we love them very nuch and you do get attached.
we almost couldnt do the first one haha but this is the way we want to live and eat our food so we pushed through and did it.
and honestly once the head is off its soooo much easier for both of us.
and i know its that way dor alot of people.

but since thats not what youre raising them for .... enjoy them! they are soo much fun.
handle them ALOT so theyre use to it and turn to enjoy being held when older.
they tend to be more friendly when yoh handle them from day 1.
learn the anatomy of the chicken.
until i actually learn the jist of it i didnt know their lunch are located on their backs basically so when you hold rhem dont put too much pressure there cause you could sufficate them.

Ok good to know. When I was a junior in high school, my biology class dissected freshly killed chickens in class. I do recall the anatomy and the strong smell, even when the gastrointestinal tract is not punctured. It actually put me off chicken for a few years, lol. Looking back Iit was interesting but wasteful as the birds went into the trash afterwards.

it is super hard!
finding a brahma is going to be difficult. ive had chickens for 2 years now and am only now able to get access to brahmas. (through a breeder)
easter eggers are easy-ish there is a feed store on the west side in canutillo who will be selling easter eggers (ameraucanas) end of this month.
sex links are easy, pretty much anyone who sells hens sell those around here.

Where is this feed store!? I've been looking for some blue layers in town for months! O figure if i can't find any by August I'll just get some shipped

Where do you buy your chicks? We are looking for Americans and Easter eggers, went to landmark mercantile and the didn't have any. Thanks!
