Mine has it's own built in dusk to dawn sensor on top, which can be disabled if you choose, but point is most new models probably come with one already. It was $40 at Wally world and it's the larger sized model. I had a black light fluorescent bug zapper in my coop all of last summer, and as far as I can tell it didn't affect the chickens in any way.
When it would get clogged up with large moths in the screen, I would simply take the screen out (it was hardware cloth) and put it in the coop for them to clean for me. June bugs are another biggie, chickens loooove them, but they're so big they tend to get stuck to the zapper instead of falling to the floor. No problem though, disassemble one morning, let them clean it, and reassemble it in the evening. hehehehe
I would still use it, except that my chickens are now strictly non-electric
so I would definitely say it didn't cause any problems for the birdies.
