Can you use a regular 12V car battery?

Yes.......... if the system is made for a 12 volt DC battery. If this is a solar charger, It should work longer in areas with frequent cloudy conditions. You just have to make sure the solar charging panel has enough capacity to get the car battery back up to full charge during the sunny days or you are just postponing the inevitable.

You can for a while, IF it's a 12 volt charger, but it won't last long.

You'd be better off with with at "deep cycle" battery​

Good point. True, the deep cycle is way better if you are running a total loss system, but if you have a solar charger it is unnecesary.
