Electric fence

I think you guys all are on the right track but be careful with AC.

We used a similar setup using solar and DC current in Arkansas for our gardens and livestock. Worked fine and no chance of death for anyone. Saw a 6ft Black bear touch it and never come back.

AC current even in low voltages can kill.

Not sure if you covered this yet, but a word of warning to those who try this without professional advice or knowledge using home current (AC). Electricity is f'ing dangerous.

The raccoon that was fried, could have been a human. Trust me. A 15 amp circuit on a 110v outlet will kill a man if they ground themselves properly. The coon that fried, well he grounded himself just right and he clamped, meaning he could not let go, that is the key.

You flick your finger out and yell "Whoooie! that sucker is hot"...grab that same wire in your fist, like a raccoon grabbing on to climb and if you are grounded, you will not let go until you are dead. Clamping.

This is just my totally unprofessional opinion as someone who spent several of my formative years carrying conduit up stairs and ladders for guys who I thought were full of it, until I improperly seated a connection and ended up across the room.

Peace my peeple :frow

I know what you are saying and where you are coming from. I have been doing electrical work and maintenance in a critical facility since 2000. The only time mine is energized is at night when everyone is in the house asleep.

Cool, I just wanted to make sure that before someone who is not experienced with AC to let a pro advise and possible help with install.

I just want to make sure you don't think I was criticizing.

Just concern for all BYC friends who may be thinking they can do this themselves, they may just be lurking and not participating and a word of caution is all I am aiming at.

You are correct and I did not think about that because I am used to everyone knowing not to mess with it. I should have thought about that also.

You’re absolutely right AC current is no joke and it’s not the voltage that gets you it’s the amps (for a human .1-.2 amps is considered lethal). Usually it’s the combo of low voltage and amps in that range that cause clamping of the heart. I’m not an electrician but I’ve been familiar with electrical work ever since I was a kid and believe me you never forget the first shock that lands you on your butt and takes your breath away (if memory serves me right mine came from an old dryer while replacing a drum belt). Anyways great point and necessary post. I know that I start talking to a like-minded individual and forget other people can read these post.

P.S. - Who’s to say I’m not trying to keep people away from my ducks too? :D
