Electrified and Sodded Run - Pix Included!

We recently replaced some windows in the house and I kept the window panels to use in a cold frame I am building, but we found out quite by accident that the chickens like to wander in and out of them sort of like a maze...cheap entertainment....

Gotcha!

I definitely think our hens have brought a different attitude about life our way. When working in the yard, I find myself taking more breaks... sitting and watching; marveling at the simple pleasures they offer.

We find anytime something "new" is placed in their run, it's entertainment night.

A new log, a box of sand, a turtle! (only a short while, then we let him go)

That is one nice run. I wonder how long the sod will last. I've been thinking about sodding my run this summer and seeing how long it will last.

Our run is in a well shaded area, and I have put a sprinkler in there that makes it easy to water, when I am in a hurry, and it doesn't freak the chickens out too much. When I am off work, I water it by hand from the well, as not to run up our water bill.

Right now we have 5 standard Buff Orps, three will being going bye-bye soon, they are roos...I am not too worried about the chickens scratching the run up because I have so few, and I supplement them with feed as well.

If you sod, you should consider starting when it is still cool up there to give it a chance to establish.

Nothing like watching the grass grow...

Great job. I wonder how long the sod with last? I only took two weeks for my girls to eat every blade of grass in the run. Now I have a moonscape for a run.

Not to be a party pooper, but I have at least 10 more sqft per bird in my run than you have, and it took just a few months for them to turn the grass into a lunar surface. It's a combination of scratching, eating, and burning it with fresh manure that kills it off. Granted, I didn't water it religiously, and it was composed of weeds as much as grass. Maybe you'll have better luck since you are actually trying to take care of the grass? Plus losing the roos will help, so heck, you may be OK. Good luck! That is one heck of an electrified run, though. It's protected like Fort Knox!
