Emergency Design for Quarentine / Brooder Coop

Ah...this might not be helpful, but if you go to Mother Earth News' website and sign up for their homesteading newsletter (free) e-mails, you can select a chicken coop plan made out of a plastic dog kennel and some wire -- builds a 3 x 10 run, and the dog-house you just get whatever size you want--mount the top BACKWARDS on the bottom half and make little plywood doors to close if you want. The run is surrounded on all six sides (including top and bottom) and is made from kennel wire tied together at the sides...If you want to be able to restrain chicks too little for the 2 x 4 wire, you can either put half inch hex on the bottom inside or use a smaller wire for the whole thing.

Hey....There's a picture of this one under 'show me your dog house coop' on this topic.

Not counting painting, my rabbit hutch tractor took only a few hours to convert for keeping chickens in. It could probably work as a temporary hospital/ jail/ quarantine for two chickens.

I love this! My only concern is that Virginia winters could be brutal to the open design... I would maybe wrap it in a tarp or something if anyone needs hospital/jail/quarantine time during the winter.

Sorry, I am spoiled and didn't think about conditions outside of coastal California. It had been in and out of my garage with a heat lamp and chicks as a brooder before I finished the coop. The wheels made it movable.

In an emergency, a dog or cat kennel works well to quarantine. Its not a long term solution, but great for a temporary fix. It can be placed most anywhere, with a dish for water and one for food. A sick chicken isn't in need of much of a run. V.
