Dear Members,

My Cockoo cochin male chicks age 4 months have developed redish swellings on and near joints of claw. Pl be so kind to advise if this is infectious Arthritis , Infectious sinovitis or some kind of Gout. It took three days to get to this stage. I have four males and three of them are effected. They can walk with difficulty spend most of the time sitting and seems to be in pain.

I am going to hazard a guess that since more than one bird is affected, you may have an infectious disease at work or a serious environmental issue. It wouldn't be gout because they are simply too young to have acquired that much bodily damage unless they have very, very limited access to fresh water. What are you feeding? Are they getting fresh water on demand? Could they have been exposed to diseased birds or come from a diseased flock?

These birds live in a clean spacious environment. Have access to clean fresh water all the time. My first suspecion was infectious sinovitis. this type of red spots appear on legs but the bird in picture has too much of these swollen patches. Testing is very expesive but i will try to get their blood checked. They are an grower mash with greens every other day.

Then gout is out of the question.

I would look at the testing if at all possible. That is the one sure way to figure out what is wrong with them.

Good luck.
