Chic is breaking through shell, but hasn't used the air cell, and isn't breaking the membrane! I managed to put a bit of a hole where the beak is, and it's now breathing. HOWEVER. it's bleeding a bit. Not much, it's stopped, but there was a bit of blood. What do I do??

How far into the hatch are you? Have the other eggs hatched?
How much blood?
So long as it’s breathing because of the blood I’d leave it be for the moment so the veins can dry up

I'm on day 20 of a button quail egg. I only had 3, the one was a dud, possibly the second too. So no others have hatched. Barely any blood, it basically stopped right away. And yes, I've left it be. It is still alive as of now

I don’t know anything about button quail unfortunately, if it doesn’t progress for 12 hours I assist after a chicken pips I’m not sure about quails
I think day twenty is quite late for quails..
How long ago did it pip?

It can take up to 24 hours from pip to zip. I am concerned about the blood. A single drop of blood is quite a lot for a chick that is the size of a dime.

My advice would be to leave it alone. If it hasn't started to zip in 24 hours, you may decide to assist then, but be aware that chicks that have problems hatching usually have problems for reasons and often have to be culled or just don't survive no matter what you do.

Your chick should have hatched on day 17, so I suspect that your incubator's temperature was a bit low. Do you have a calibrated thermometer or three inside your incubator? What was the humidity (with a salt tested hygrometer)? Never trust the readings on the incubator. They lie.
