EMERGENCY Measures in HIGH HEAT! Tips and important information

I have been worried about the heat this is very very helpful information.
Heat is something to be concerned about. Chickens handle the cold much better than heat. I'm happy to know that this was helpful to you!

I keep polyvisol for vitamins and probios for probiotics on hand at all times. It really comes in handy when needed. :)

I have a full cabinet full of chicken supplies. The only thing I do not have yet is a dewormer. The one I need is around $34.00 at the Fleet Farm store.

What really helped yesterday when the temps was in the 100'sF, was that constant cold water running in their spot and dunking them of course. I ended up dunking them late last night at 10pm. Their coop was still 94F. My flock slept in this morning. This heat is suppose to continue all week.:/

Here in SW VA we had a heat wave over the weekend 104 - 106 if not hotter, it has been in the high 90s the last 2 days and feels so much cooler haha. I have been holding my chickens feet in a bucket of cool water to cool them down. Spraying the bushes and trees where they like to hang out and making sure they have plenty of water, I can't wait for it to cool down, we lost power on Friday night and it still isn't on and it has been miserable. We hooked up a generator the other day and it is so loud I am worried about the poor girls, they had to find a new place to take a dirt bath but seem to be adjusting! Thanks for the good tips!

We installed a 5,000 BTU air conditioner in their chicken house (It was $98 at Fleet Farm.) When it is 95 degrees outside, I call them inside, slide their pop door shut, and flip on the AC. I have been bringing them in by 5 p.m. and cooling them to about 72 degrees overnight. My rooster was going to die otherwise. One night he didn't even roost at night. He sat in the corner acting delerious, panting and fanning his wings (Dark Brahma - HUGE turkey sized beast.)

Yes I'm sure people will say it's bad to cool them to 72 at night and then they go back to 90-95 during the day - BUT, I had to. I was trying to water spray and lots of water for them to drink, fans, etc.. and my Brahmas were just not going to make it. They are too big and too heavily feathered.

I found that even at 75-80 inside the chicken house with the AC running was still too hot and the Brahmas just kept panting and wing fanning. But 72 makes everybody VERY very very happy!!

When they go out in the morning, it's in the 70s outside temp, then gradually heats up to 90-95, and they only have a couple hours of the 90s before I get home and bring them in and slowly start cooling them down again. So it's not like they're shocked from going from 72 degrees to 95 or anything. They have hours to adjust as the temperature naturally rises during the day.

When they see me walking toward their outdoor run in the evening, they go crazy, and RUN inside the chicken house. I go inside, and they are swarming overtop of my feet like I'm their savior. LOL. They REALLY love that air conditioning, and they know exactly what it is now! Very spoiled.

We never EVER get heat like this in WI that lasts for this long. This is insanity.

I did ask my husband to run air into the coop. He declined.:(

Our coop is inside our garage. I can't imagine it would be too hard to run air through their. Oh well, we do heat it during the winter. Just so it's more comfortable for me to clean. It gets pretty cold at -22 outside. We cover the run in plastic, so they have the coop and run all winter.

It's still very hot here. The heat won't break until tomorrow night supposedly.

I provide a kiddie pool for them to hang around, none of my birds would get in willingly. I also put vitamins and electrolytes in their water and give them ice cold watermelon as well as hosing down the run and all the shady places they hang around back by their coop. It has been VERY hot here lately and gonna be completely miserable today topping off at 100 degrees plus the humidity factor which has been around 70%. I have a box fan in their coop and there are 5 windows that stay open all the time but still doesn't cool it down at all. Add 39 heaters and it quickly reaches the upper 90's. We had some heavy rains the other night which helped cool things down for half a day. I might be bringing my elderly bantam cochin hen in the house today or I am afraid she just won't make it. Now is the time I wish our chickens were still in our garage which is both heated and has a/c. I feel soooo bad for the birds :( Even tho I am doing the best I can with the means I have available, it doesn't feel like enough for them. Guess I will spend the afternoon after work dunking 39 chickens in the kiddie pool, yikes! Stay cool out there people! and Happy 4th of july!

My pleasure. You might want to consider dunking them up to their necks in the cool water, not just their feet to bring their body temps down. Those temperatures are unreasonable. :(

Keep up the good work, hopefully we'll all get a break from the heat soon!

It is very hot. We both live in the same area. Good luck, I only have 9 to dunk. I wish I had my big dog kennel in the house, it's still in our coop waiting for our young chicks to grow for integration. Otherwise, I'd bring all in today and butt up the other kennel for extra room.
