EMERGENCY!! PLEASE HELP!! MY HEN IS POOPING OUT BLOOD!!! EMERGENCY!!!!!

Animal lover,

i just spoke to a cornell university vet about my own chick whose poop had both cocci and roundoworms, and she told me i can give it both meds at the same time (specifically, piperazine and amprolium, not sulmet and its ingredients - which i didn't ask about). Amprolium - which is in corid, is better than sulmet for cocci, so get that. Again be careful with the dose. If you buy the liquid corid, 9.6% solution, you have to mix 1 gallon of water with 9.5 ml or cc of the corid, and only offer that water to drink.I am a bit worried she is drinking too much and might overdose though.

You have to be very careful with the dose of the wormer. if you are using wazine the label instructions are these:
Over 6 weeks of age: for each 100 birds, use 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) of Wazine-17 in 2 U.S. gallons (7.6 liters) of drinking water.
that means that you need to give her 2 fluid ounces of wazine divided by 100 = 0.02 fluid ounces which is only 0.12 teaspoons mixed with 2 gallons divided by 100 = 0.02 gallons = 5.12 tablespoons. I would mix this separately and syringe it down her mouth at intervals to make sure she drinks the full amount of wormer. It's a one day dose that needs to be repeated after 3 weeks. If she is drinking a lot, you don't want overdose her.

It sounds like you need to treat immediately and hope for the best. You can treat everyone but I would isolate her as well so you can monitor what she is drinking.

You should take a poop sample to the nearest vet - they will charge 20-30$ and then you will know for sure. I am not sure excessive drinking is a symptom so it's possible there are different problems. Could she have broken an egg inside her or something of the sort? did you check her abdomen for swelling and her vent for tissue injury?

i had a baby EE die from bloody poop. It just started pooing blood so i went on here and then there is some cure but i could not afford the medicine so she died. she would sleep alot and hardly eat. she would not drink on her own so i had to dip her head in the water and then make it so she could swallow by tipping her back. she drank. hope you have better luck then me!

that was cocci for sure. you can buy amprolium for 12 dollars. You should keep it handy. When you need it, you need it right away.

Update: So, we drove around all morning trying to locate a bottle of corid. After talking to MANY different vets and feed stores, a farm store about 35 min away had a bottle. We asked them to hold it, and thankfully they did. We grabbed the corid and a bottle of wormer just in case. The instructions were for calves not chickens which was extremely frustrating, so we stopped at our vets office to ask for instructions. Of course, hes out of town! after talking to the assistant who txted him, we figured out the right dosage. whew! I put 7.5 cc in one gallon, and then used an eye dropper to give some to each hen in case they did not drink that day. My Rhode island Red, Penny, who is usually extremely shy and scared of people, was so lethargic she suggled right into my lap when I gave her some of the corid/water mix from the eye dropper! I hope we see some improvment, and I will keep posting updates. thanks!

that's a good dose. You can give between 5 and 9.5cc per gallon. If she is really sick, i would add the extra 2cc. Great idea on the eye dropper too to make sure she gets some med. I really hope they pull through for you!

I would give the wormer too in case it's the worms that are the problems. Which wormer did you get?

soler, thank you so much! your advice has been very helpful! They are all still alive which is great at this point. The poo is still runny and bloody but its getting better. so you think its ok to gve them both at the same time? i think im going to treat the whole flock for worms too. just to be on the safe side! so for the corid treatment it says that its a five day treatment for calves on the bottle, but is it the same for chickens? we are in our second day now, so I guess I will just do 3 more days. we are not eating the eggs right now, but do you think its ok to eat them while they are on corid? sorry for all the questions and thank you

Wazine is a good wormer, but only kills roundworms. It is ok to give piperazine and amprolium on the same day, but mix the batch separately. Take out the waterer tonight and give the wazine first thing tomorrow morning. Make sure you adjust the dose for the chickens you have as they need to drink all the water. Multiply the below dose for all the chickens you have (pasted from above):

and actually the dose is to be repeated after 10 days, not 3 weeks.

It is ok to eat the eggs with the corid, but you need to toss them after worming for 14 days to be super safe. Folks like to scramble and feed back to the chickens so they are not wasted.

yes 5 days of corid.

sometimes, if it was a bad outbreak, people continue the course at half strenght another 2 weeks to prevent reinfection.
