EMERGENCY VERY INFECTED VENT

I know the thought of peeling it off is scary. First time for me was the same. :hugs

Do you suggest I use tweezers to try and peel it off? The hen, Cleopatra, is at my grandmother's house and I am about to head over there and soak her and everything. When I was there yesterday it didn't seem like it would come off easily. Also, what do I do if she bleeds? Thanks for all your help.

you ever put glue on your hands just to peel it off and it looked like your skin ? If its harder then that to come off Personally I would wait another day or so or maybe take a little at a time. A little blood will stop on its own . If you do it slow and run into a gusher then stop. the antibiotic ointment should slow the bleeding. If not use some corn starch but only if its a heavy bleed or one that wont stop.

Tweezers, fingers, and gauze pads are what I use. Do you have a Petsmart or Petco near you? If so, get some of this:
Gauze pads
If it bleeds a lot, apply the stypic powder and stop picking, but I don't think it's going to bleed that much.

The putrid odor is likely necrotic tissue. All black tissue should be cut away and removed. The yellow substance is chicken pus, which is solid like wax. Strategic incisions on the edges of the wound may allow for the solid pus to be removed by exerting central pressure toward the slits in the skin.

Vetericyn is a very good all-round antiseptic and wound treatment before performing surgery and afterwards. Of course you won't be able to use a bandage on this sort of wound so you will need to keep the patient in a clean crate over the next several weeks while she undergoes treatment.

Sugar is also a blood coagulant.
