Emergency Volunteers: Firefighters, EMT's, First Responders

That's funny. I once administered fourth aid, rather than first aid. It was a call at noon on a Tuesday, for an injury incurred over the previous weekend.

I was an ER nurse for the last ten years. Changed jobs due to what I thought was burn out in March- turned out to be cancer- hopefully back to work later this summer!

Acid Chipmunk- DISPATCH ROCKS- your jobs are hard, too! I love listening to some of the crud people call in to you! Hats off to you

Enjoy your free day, Firefighter Chick!

This is my 6th year as an EMT! I love it, but college has kept me from doing much of it anymore. I have an awesome crew though. I've been Thursday nights ever since I joined! I'm hoping once I graduate I'll have some time before beginning grad school to ride calls. I seem to be the white cloud because everytime I do ride, we don't get ANY calls. The rest of the crew loves it, but boy do I get out of practice!

You are not forgotten. I am a corrections officer and I know how important you guys are, and what a stressful job you have. We appreciate you.

I've been a volunteer firefighter for 16 years and over 10 years as the head of our local company
I have been an EMT-B for 10 years, now with 5 endorsements.

Yes I am female and am the longest running President and highest trained volunteer on our company roster.
I take pride in rubbing that in certain "males" faces when they try to take over at a fire.
Threatened one guy with being arrested if he ever showed up as a "loose cannon" on a fire again. He don't show up anymore. He's not a member and has refused to take any training.
One department got a hard lesson in not issuing orders at one of my fires especially when they are NOT on scene.
Yeah I get a bit testy when these guys try to step on my toes.
They also learned if they don't respond to my radio traffic I get their attention by way of 250psi and a 3" line.

acid_chipmunk I LOVE our dispatchers. Only had trouble with one that always had a chip on her shoulder whenever I had to talk to her either over the phone or radio. She's no longer there. I wasn't the only one she was rude to.

I'm a first responder at work, but that's not my primary job, I'm just a volunteer who's taken classes to be able to help out in a pinch. Since there is a hospital literally 2 miles away I just have to be up on my cpr, know how to run an AED and first aid (mainly burns, cuts etc.) Most things in our shop can cut or scratch you.. but with over 50% of our staff 60 years old and older..... cpr and running a defibrillator is def a priority.

Those walkers and wheelchairs can be dangerous!! Just kidding I couldn't resist!! My hat is off to all EMT's, FF's, nurses, dispatchers and anyone else I forgot. What a challenging job you all have. The firefighters here are getting a real workout with all the wildfires burning here. Praying for rain so they can have a little break!!
