With the girls!
Hi everyone, I have a chicken and her eye is all scabbed over and swollen shut. It started a few days ago just with her swollen eye, and then it started to spread all over her face. does anyone know what might be happening? Thanks so much for any help!

Update! I just talked to a friend and she said that the blue scabs look like frostbite. I tried putting Vaseline on them, but they still aren't healing.I still don't know how to explain the puffy head and sealed eye. The other eye started to close too. One of the eye's is healed shut, and when a different friend tried to gently pull it open, it started bleeding. her earlobes are also in terrible shape. any ideas? I really need some help, and I don't know what to do with her. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you located? From the background of these photos I would say that frostbite is not the cause here as it does not appear that you are in a location where the climate is such that it would be an issue this time of year - nor would it explain your birds' symtpoms.
How does your bird's breathing sound? Respiratory infections often have symptoms that show in the eyes/face in chickens. What does the inside of her mouth look like? Does her breath smell foul?

It looks like the others may have pecked her constantly for some reason. The spots on her ears look like individual peck marks, and that would explain eye damage. Separate her, if you haven't already, and see if she starts healing up. Give her plenty of yummy food (scrambled eggs, yogurt, meal worms) and fresh water. See if she perks up a little. Is she drinking and eating on her own, and regularly?

Thanks for all the help!!! I tried looking at the inside of her mouth, but she wouldn't let me. Her breath smells terrible and I don't know what her breathing sounds like. She has been just laying down all da. Can I still eat the eggs? Is it contagious? What do you think it is? Thanks again for all the help!

What emmaie892000 said was that it might be a Respiratory infection. I don't know if you can eat the eggs, but I figure if it is peck marks like emmaie892000 said, she is under stress and I don't know if she'll be laying eggs. I wouldn't eat the eggs though, just to be safe.

Thank you! do you have any idea how to treat it? Should I separate her from the rest of the flock? Welcome to BYC!

I don't know how to treat it but YES! Definitely separate her. Do you have like an extra coop, or to the extreme, an extra bathroom? You could put her in a dog kennel in a bathroom. We did that with our old hen Jennifer (R.I.P. Jenny) but she had a different sort of problem. And maybe after like a few days of letting her rest separated if she hasn't recovered a little you could take her to the vet but it'd be very expensive

I have an extra dog crate and a shed, but we are going away in a few days and the person housesitting knows nothing about chickens. I don't think that we will take her to the vet. I put some antibiotic on her scabs. Her breath smells like spoiled milk. Do you think she can recover? Do you think that this is contagious?
