Thank you for checking. He is much more chipper, his brother isn't doing as well but still better.
They are eating but I don't think they like the water with the antibiotic in it. The mash has tons of that antibiotic and electrolyte water in it though, so they are getting some through their food. We did more Vetericyn on their wounds a little while ago, and gave them a quarter aspirin (low dose, cherry) and now they are resting. I don't think they like their cage covered though - they want to look out.
No one should love their chickens like this. I was a total melt-down, heartbroken, guilt-ridden, bawling mess all yesterday.
I am having a similar problem. My guineas attacked my chicken tried to doctor her but she finally had to be euthanized country style. We'll gave them another week while we tried to figure out what to do with them and they jumped another red hen. Gosh. Went on Craigslist and sold them ASAP. Anyway I have been trying to doctor her. Have her in a pen in our garage (has a gas heater when it gets cold. Anyway keep cleaning her eye and putting genomicin optic on it and giving her durmycian in food and water got better and her swollen face and eye looked good. Then two days later back to ugly swollen face pus draining closed eye stuffed sounding breathing. Week 3. Got antibiotic from vet adding that to water and food. Oh yes feeding her yogurts cottage cheese bread and scrambled egg with medication on it and in her water. She eats that 2x day Can see a little bit of her eye but still a lot of swelling on face and eye and pus draining. Gosh she is such a little fighter I hate to give up Any ideas?
Sorry to hear about your troubles!!! Poor chickens.
My boys are about the same as yesterday, still unsteady on their feet and resting a lot but eating just fine. I can tell they are still very injured. We are putting Vetericyn on their wounds twice a day (takes two of us and hubby works) although I do try in the middle of the day. Their wounds don't look any worse, but it's only the 3rd day.
I feed them mash made with their medicated water and some yogurt. I try them on other foods like a couple of blueberries, some turkey (which they fought over!), veggies (which they ignore), and other things I think are good for them. Their water has that antibiotic in it and electrolytes. I give them 1/4 low-dose aspirin in the morning and at night for pain.
Their cage is right here with me and I keep it covered most of the time, but do open it up so they can socialize and see me off and on during the day. I sing lullabies to them when they make their questioning sounds and talk baby-talk to sooth them. Call me nuts, but I know they are traumatized and it breaks my heart to see them scared and injured.
Because of the danger of infection, I clean their poo up constantly. My goodness, what a stench! It must be the medicine. I have a layer of newspapers, a soft rug on on one side, then a layer or 2 of paper toweling over that I can easily rip off and toss when they poo...
