EMU PICS as Promised Photo heavy!

I use them as livestock protection. Once they know what animals belong to "Their Flock" they will go after anything that does not belong. I'll have to post a pic of them grazing in the pasture next to my little seramas, I've seen a lot less hawks come by. They also chase off cats and anything else that happens to wander in the yard. You do have to take special care when adding to your flock, because anything that is new is a "predator". Despite this mine see people as one of them and beg for attention. I raised them around people and my livestock since they were chicks, to this day they are still afraid of the peacocks who use to chase them as babies. LOL it is fun to watch a grow emu run from a peacock! They are often raised for their oil, their feathers that are great insulators (emu have no down) and their very lean meat. Mine stand as tall as my 6 foot privacy fence. They love the water and are supposed to be good swimmers, as well as jumpers. They make great comic relief as they are always doing something silly.

leecey411,

My father-in-law, who sold you the emu eggs, just told me today that someone got some of them to hatch! I am astonished, we've always wondered why they wouldn't hatch all of these years. My wife and I have always just taken them, blown them out, and made them into art. I've considered making an incubator to see if I could get any of them to hatch. Do you have any info on what I could do to try and make some of the eggs that I get from him hatch?

cobock,
Someone posted on BYC that your father in law was selling Emu eggs. So just for fun I thought I would try to hatch them! We picked up five and I used my little styrofoam Hovabator to hatch them. We hand turned for 49 days, first couple of weeks 5-6 times a day, and then later when I was too tired to get up all night about 3-4 times a day. I incubated them at 97 degrees about 30-35% humidity. Honestly I was verypleasd to hatch two of the five. My incubator does have a fan. Try it, you may be surprised!

NancyDzCONGRATULATIONS![/quote :

There's a couple that brings one on a leash to the Farmer's market, they sell emu oil and things made with the feathers at their booth. It's a reallly friendly one and cool to see.

The males make a really cool sound too.. sounds like a low deep drumming sound.

Nancy

Sounds like you've met "Winston" who belongs to a couple of people I know in Placerville. She's really quite the friendly bird.

Tomorrow I'll be placing an ad to sell my emu chicks that hatched on 2/28. I love having the babies but want to just stick to my breeding pair.

*Sorry for resurrecting an oldish thread, but this seemed like the best place to talk about this seeing as these emu babies are related.*

Ok, there is something going on this year with my father in law's emu eggs. Leecey411 hatched 2 of them and now we have baby emus of our own! I never got around to trying to incubate any. But 5 of the 8 that he left for one of the Males to sit on have hatched! They hatched on Easter Sunday. Several baby goats where also born that morning too, interestingly enough. Here's a link to a Youtube video that I just posted of them. Now he has 11 emus! Someone asked what do you do with an emu? I ask, what do we do with 11 emus!

My neighbor had emus and one accidently hung itself on a fence. His mother slow cooked it; like in a cassarole with a gravy and they brought it to the bar so we all could try it. It was unanimous, "tastes like beef" we all loved it. I'd eat it again in a heartbeat.

How adorable! I want some! I wish I had the space. I think Emus would definitely result in a divorce though. LOL

OOOOO, SO cute!!! I want one!!! lol My husband FINALLY agreed to let me have one (some) when we get back to the states!!!

I worked for a lady who had some exotics and the emus were in a pen with several goats. They lived peaceably til the goats had babies. The emus promptly dispatched them by tossing them high in the air. My personal experience was that they were very nasty birds, this incident aside. Perhaps it was their upbringing, hope so!
