Emu pictures and stories.... post them here

just a curious question but why do people keep these birds

Ostrich, Emu and Rea

i know some people eat the meat, but not sure of the reason

is it meat, eggs or onimental

btw you guys have lovley birds

As far as emu go ( which have better temperaments than the others)...they are some of the funniest, most loving birds. Mine come give me hugs, love attention and rubbing on. They are goofy, child like and have an innocent child like wonder about the world. They do funny running fall down dances, are very inquisitive and are just all over unusual. They also help my dogs patroll the property, chase off strange animals . They also keep people at bay.... Most won't enter with a six foot bird that has big toenails, a large beak and grunts..... Lol

Are emus that nice? I've heard that they are nasty and I was hoping to get one someday. I love all of you guys' birds! I wish I had an emu.

Shadow Rabbit,
some of us are a little puzzled as to why emus have such a bad reputation. Other species in the family – ostriches and cassowaries, for example – really are ornery. (Though we love them all equally. There are breeders here at BYC who have rare and splendid birds.) Indeed, they do fuss and fight among themselves.

Australians themselves don’t consider emus ornery. Actually, they don’t consider them at all. (Though it must be said that farmers hate them, and shoot them on an industrial basis because they do a lot of damage to fences and crops.)
It’s probably a matter of appearances: people see the size of the talons, and their minds start working overtime.

Supreme Emu

The source of the evil Emu reputation is a mystery to me too. Could be people equate "big long necked bird" with an Ostrich, or have only ever met Emus raised as livestock rather than pets.
I like to describe Gerry as a 'two legged puppy with feathers and a beak' because he's just the friendliest guy you'll ever meet, he even sleeps with me for a few hours every night. He gets spooked by new people but give him a few minutes and it's like he's known you for his entire life and he never seems to forget a face.

^ Such an evil, nasty bird.

Awwwwwww.......

This really makes me wish we had a bigger and more private yard. An emu is not in my future on this piece of land, but your little guy looks as sweet as can be. Thanks for sharing!

I just love Gerry! What a sweetheart! When you get tired of that sweetie, Gerry can come live with me!

Now the fun begins!

Today we had a BBQ. Fred and Wilma really think I am their parent (mama or papa?)

When I sit down, they sit down beside me. I was watching the grandkids on the trampoline, and they sat and watched too!
