Enjoy by Oct. 24...

You're really rubbing it in to us jealous folks, aren't you! Seriously, congratulations and what a fun experiment!

I wonder what the possibility of getting some one to ship these eggs or the ones at Whole Foods...Not that I can plan to hatch much more in good conscience, with winter coming.

GREAT PICTURES !!! GREAT THREAD !

I especially appreciated the "pip times" along with the "hatch times". Noticing that many chicks seemed to require 12 hours to hatch after "pip" may tend to relieve some "hatching anxiety". Ha-Ha.

The last picture is a GREAT Halloween pic!

3 Peeps and two pips currently.

I weigh each egg individually and figure out the percentage weight loss and then average them. As you can see, the humidity controls the weight loss and the objective is to lose 12-14% by Day 18 and then go on lockdown at 60% RH.

Thank you Napa. I have another question. You had 16 eggs in there right. 8 hatched. Thats a 50% ratio. What was going on with the other 8? Did any pip? And were they all alive at lockdown?
The reason that I am asking is that I had a poor hatch last week. I hatched in the egg cartons and I am beginning to think that with the standing up in the carton it give the chicks a little less "area" to be able to pip and not drown. Even with the proper amount of humidity loss if the chick pips at the wrong spot it won't make it.
I am going to try laying them on their sides again. And see if the hatches improve.
I have tried the egg carton method and am not seeing improvement in hatches.

I'm about to set this week, maybe giving some to a broody, except she'll make them be wild & hate humans.

When you weigh them, do you take them all out? how do you keep them from chilling & the bator from losing too much heat?
Thanks,
L

I don't worry about the carton's material, I don't think it matters.

This incubator is an old Hova-Bator forced air styrobator. Exact model unknown, but it's pretty old. The disposable plastic trays for the floor don't even fit it anymore, but I use my own water dishes for more/easier control.
