ERGENT , my ducky cant walk!

Have you tried to open the foot up?

My freind suggested making it so that the foot opens, like a splint sortof, and keeping it that way for a while.

I think the duckling even if it doesnt recover it should be able to adapt to walking that way. My friend says she has seen full grown ducks like that with little to no problem, they just walk funny.

As for the swollen knee, couldnt that be from falling down on it? Just a thought...

Its really really strange, she seems perfectly fine in herself. She eats and drinks fine and does her best to waddle over when I have treats. But I cant seem to tell if she is getting better. The good news is, she isnt getting worse, so thats a plus! She was my first ever ducky I hatched myself so I hope she will be ok. I am really really worried though. The foot is open now, she walks really funny though, its like her feet are pointing in. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Also, i was thinking, if its an inflamation to her knee, would ibuprofen work? If so, how much do I give her? Would be great if I can do all I can for her.

I can't find anything in Storey's Guide to recommend it. In fact, in one section there is a list of medications that have shown no negative effects, and neither Tylenol nor ibuprofen are on that list.

For relief of pain, what I have read has been to give them a chance to swim in lukewarm water (takes weight off the leg but allows movement), make sure enough clean water is available, and let them take it easy. If there is a sprain, just give it time to heal itself.

That's what I've turned up so far.

Amiga, you have been great! Thank you ever so much! Il get her in the bath today and keep an eye on her. The good thing is she doesnt seem like the leg/knee is bothering her too much. She seems fine in all other aspects other than the fact she walks a bit funny. Il get her in the bath and she how she does then update you later. Thank you again Amiga

Can you post pictures? That might help people get an idea of what the issues might be...

Here you go guys, hope this helps someone to determine how I can help her! Thank you!

I've had chickens with this issue. I think you will have to be her "primary care giver". I would let her swim several times a day (physical therapy). I'm not sure there is really anything you can do as far as nutrients/meds. I will do some searching and see if I come up with anything.

But in my case with chickens, they usually end up compensating for the deformity and walk funny. But like I said with you being her "primary caregiver".. she will require more work and attention.

Hang in there.
