In many places using antifreeze to poision an animal is covered under cruelity to animal laws, and if they can trace if back to you, it is big trouble. Now since the animal has been agressive on your property where your children are, tell animal control that, the dog is on your property acting aggressive to you, and you have toddlers. I doubt your neighbors are going to change. If they do go pick it up from impound, well, then it needs a perminant solution. As I'm sure you realize the dog is the same height as your much lighter kids. At this point I would stop trying to talk to the owners, they don't care, if your dad butts in, let him know the dog is already aggressive to you, and you're doing this to keep his grandbabies intact.

If the animal is really aggressive, you need to handle the situation promptly. Have a lawyer draft a letter to the owners detailing the past problems. This sets the scene and documents the problem for a future law suit. It makes them aware that there is a problem and if they do not handle it there will be consequences.

Bad dogs always seem to have bad owners.

Redhen, I love your perspectives and honesty!
I have been on the other side of this issue before. I moved to where I am now last fall, with my DBF and four dogs. I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, but as an adult have been a bit of a city girl...anyway, it turned out that my nightly freetime for my dogs (who I could not imagine being unkind to anyone) was more like nightly goat terror time for my neighbors. I was utterly and completely unaware of this until Mr. Neighbor kindly informed me that he was thinking about shooting my dog.
After a bit of collaboration, we agreed on a solution.
I spent the next few weeks in his pasture with a rather heavy hand, teaching my dogs that goats are to be ignored.
It sounds like you are way past that, but always remember that your a**hole neighbor might be totally unaware how much they are bothering you.

And i'm really very lucky that my neighbors like me! AND that they like my dogs.. i dont let my dogs run free...if my dogs ever get loose i freak out! And my neighbors see this! They even HELP me chase down my one rogue girl dog...why do they help me, you may ask? Because they KNOW i respect them and do NOT just let my dogs roam free..ever! AND god forbid if i had an agressive dog! I'd never have an agressive dog anyways..! AND if i did..i honestly would not blame my neighbors for shooting it! I would shoot (if i had a gun..

) an agressive dog that barked at me like the OP is explaining. NO dog should ever come into your yard and bark at YOU!...and if they do..that dog is BAD news! So what was your point again..i tend to ramble..sorry...


edited to add: so i guess my point is: i am on both sides of this also...i have dogs and i have birds. If a dog gets out once..its an accident...if it keeps happening..the dog needs to go..if the dog owner wont listen and respect what you ask of them...

You know, it just drives me crazy how some dog owners have no respect for their neighbors. I would fully expect my neighbors to hate me if i just let my dogs run loose. Instead...We are having a road party tomorrow..and i'm bringing my dogs. Invited! Now, if i was a jerk and just let my dogs run loose on my road..then i can guarantee that my neighbors would have me for supper! And i would do the same! I dont want to deal with your dogs in MY yard...and you dont have to deal with mine.. its called simple human respect for others...Whats so hard people?
