I know what you mean about having the right "feel" to a fabric. I'm verrrrrrry particular too. It has to be the right weight, thread count weave, and have the right "hand" to it when I handquilt. When I shop in a store, I don't just run my hand over the fabric, I also pick it up and rub it between my fingers and thumb and then hold a layer up with my hand under it to see how the light passes through it.
Would you like me to send you some samples of the fabrics I have bought on-line at ThousandsofBolts.com?
Of course, the list of manufacturers they sell is a real help since fabrics by a manufacturer you have used before will have the same "feel" standard.
Click the manufacturer's menu bar on this link to see which ones they have on hand.

I was really wary at first about ordering fabrics on-line because I wondered if the colors would appear "correct". It helps if I know the manufacturer and to have seen the fabric in my favorite quilt shops. I can then go online and order with more confidence....always at a much lower price.
I've ordered from several online companies but always go back to Thousands of Bolts. I particularly like Moda, Marcus, Northcott, Kona/Seattle, Benartex, Andover, Red Rooster, RJP, Kaufman, South Seas Imports, and P & B Textiles.
