Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Wow, that is lucky! I hatched 8, and I swear they all look like boys to me. I haven't had a chance to really study them, though, and they are only 3 1/2 weeks.
I do hope I get a few boys to choose from. My head roo has a serious case of gout, so he will be going to the freezer this fall, if he lasts that long.

Check the inside of the shank. You should be able to see clear spur buds by now.

Last year for Easter I hatched Skyline EO Basque chicks. This year I picked the three best pullets and Megan let me get the best rooster and they are hatching tonight!

Four are out already!

I will post pictures tomorrow.

At what age can I start to guess gender?

A couple of these chicks are snow white at two weeks, are they likely to stay white or do some color up later?

They are doing much better with me now when I add feed or change the waterer now. A couple will climb in my hand while the others just look at it.

Mine are now 4 weeks, and the boys are becoming much more obvious. All of mine are growing combs, but the boys have larger combs and quite pink.

I have never had a snow white chick, but I know some people are getting all white hens occasionally.

I am wondering when leg color becomes obvious. They hatched with pink legs. One chick is getting a yellow hue, but 5 of them were a yellow x yellow cross. I can't wait until they feather out and grow. I'm going to be selecting a new rooster.

I hatched 13 chicks from the skyline Basque. There were no sticky chicks, curly toes or other health problems. fertility and hatchability were both good too! Very healthy chicks.

The Basque hatched first along with some OEs. The hatch also had White Emps and Crele Penedesencas:

They look great! Congratulations on an excellent hatch.

OR4-Hmom......You would see color by now if they were going to color. They may be White though. I kept a hen out of Greenfire stock that is solid white. She is a very growthy bird that has vivid yellow legs and was actually one of my best looking birds, confirmation wise, from that bunch of eggs. OBVIOUSLY she is pretty fertile also!!! It is recessive white....one of the folks on here better than me on genetics will have to chime in here, but I think she can have offspring that are colored?????? I know she won't but if she has Blue legs, were going to have to slap a Bresse Rooster!!

Actually, my Bresse's have never been out of their pen about 100 yards from any EO's!!..............BUT....I DO know where you can get Bresse eggs if you want some someday!!!!!.................Mike
