Tony I am so very sorry to read of your tragedy, to loose your entire flock is devastating!!

I understand about having aggressive EO roosters, I have had a couple real buggers in the 5 years I have owned EO's. I breed for temperament so those boys go I don't care how "correct" they are. Sorry to hear you will not be continuing with them.

Thank you. I am sorry too but I do have to move on. I will keep up with the EO world as a subscriber here & on the EO forum.

I am confused. Are you saying that your EO's were aggressive and created problems with the other breeds? I had one cockerel (out of dozen I have grown out) that was aggressive. You was culled and the rest of my EO's have been very easy to keep with other breeds and small children.

Thanks for the clarification. This is something that I will have to watch for in my flock (and cull for).

Before I got EO's I was told that they started to lay at 18 weeks, laid 250 eggs a years, that they pullets laid XL eggs early on approaching Jumbo as hens, had good meat properties, and were the friendliest chickens in the world. I guess that was a bit of an exaggeration because mine were all over 25 weeks old when they laid their first eggs, were more like 165 egg layers, and their meat properties were equally average for a dual purpose breed. I felt their friendliness however was right on target. Where some breeds turn and run from us when we are in the yard the EO's are always under our feet. When the flock tester came for the P/T test in February I simply whistled and the whole EO flock came running. It would have take me 30 minutes to catch hens of some breeds if they knew the were going to get pricked. The EO's however just stood at our feet and the cockerel didn't even get ruffled when the tester tore fluff off the wings of one of his hens to prepare a spot to draw the blood. The friendly nature of the EO's has been what I like about them. Slowly the utilities will get there too. They have reported much better utilities in Canada that what I am currently getting so I know the breed has just cone through a bottle neck with the US imports, but that they will regain their utilities over time with proper management and breeding.

So what do you guys think? Hatched 3 weeks ago... (I'm afraid that I have 5 roos and only 1 pullet)
Pink (roo?)

Black (Roo?)

Green (Roo?)

Red (Pullet?)

And there two hatch mates are obviously Roos.

I understand.

When I lost my entire adult flock at the end of March due to a disaster caused by asymptomatic birds (MG & MS) that had been quarantined for almost 4 weeks, I had to make some decisions on what my future flock would be.

The following is the story line of what happened to my adult chickens.

*************************************

Unfortunately, I have to be the bearer of bad news. The following information was provided to some friends and customers and includes several updates along the way.

So bring a long story to closure, I will not sell any chicken, chick, or hatching egg which has been exposed to a disease. This has been an emotionally wrenching experience and a very expensive lesson. I had done well for starting out selling chickens, chicks and hatching eggs when this happened. So I am basically set back a year in my plans.

With respect to the EOs, it is a breed that I really liked, admired, and with which I had done well. But I do not have the time, energy, and resources to deal with an aggressive breed that creates problems with other breeds.

Best regards to EO breeders and owners. EOs truly are beautiful chickens. Maybe someday I will try them again.

Many thanks to all! I cannot begin to tell you what a relief it is knowing that my young chickens are MG/MS negative (free)!

My coops and equipment have been pressure washed and disinfected with a greater that 10% bleach mixture (2.5 cups concentrated bleach in 1.5 gallon total mixture. I will do one disinfection (bleach mixture) spray down on Monday. This will be followed later by an Oxine spray down. Everything should be ready for the first batch of chickens to move in by the beginning of May.

Hatches:

2/28 5 cream legbars (CLB)
3/8 4 CLB & 2 SFH
3/18 6 CLB
4/5 5 CLB & 2 jubilee orpingtons (JO)
4/14 9 blue wheaten/wheaten ameraucana

Projected Hatch:

4/24 20+ SFH & 1 JO
Mid May More CLB and JO
So recovery efforts are well underway. LOL- I am going to need the brooder space!
