Thanks for adding me to the list, MD! Your broody EO is adorable, NP, and I'll PM in a bit about the pullets.

I'll try to take some updated pictures of the chicks hatched from MD's flock. They are cute little buggers.

I took a few pictures today. I sold my really dark guy and the odd one with the beard. I'm going to hang onto Mr. Pink here. He's the best I've got, although he's got too much black in his hackles and chest and is really much darker than I'd like overall. He was tiny in the beginning but has ended up with the most even, stout width.



My rw cockerel was actually the biggest of my Skyline hatch group. He's going in Craigslist now, but if anyone has a use for him, let me know.


The pullets are nearing point of lay. They are 22 weeks old (Easter Hatch). The white-legged girl definitely looks more developed... perhaps too developed. Her comb and wattles are the same size as the cockerel, and look at the other pullet in the background. Do you think I might have a hermaphrodite, MD?

Really?!  Seems like that would go hand in glove with a hardy, homestead, farm type chicken...  Were you looking just for eggs, or the meat aspects, too?

Five out of my eleven Black Australorps went broody this summer and all had successful hatches. Only one out of six of my EO girls went broody, but then again they're just pullets...

gubi on EOCF reported broody EOs, but I haven't noticed anyone else mentioning it.

Here's my girl, she's the one that lost three to the blacksnake...

MD, like I said on our forum, I have had 8 go broody this year. A couple have also. Even more than once and have been awesome mom's. It's a trait I am selecting for and hope to secure it in my breeding flock

I like the looks of your cockerel. My Easter hatch pullets have very different combs. I only have 3, but one has a large comb, maybe not quite as large as the one you show here, but definitely a larger comb than the other two that are the same age. One has a very tiny comb, and the third one is medium size. I hope to get some photos this weekend.

I now have 2 olive egger pullets from this same hatch that have started to lay, so it shouldn't be long!

I have a young rw cockeral in the coop that is available as well, if anyone needs one. Not the biggest in the flock, but definitely not the smallest and so far he has a good disposition.

Sorry, Susan! There I go not paying attention again!

Breeds that go broody often have the unfortunate tendency to not lay a whole lot of eggs. I would rather have great egg-layers and brood their offspring in other ways, as is true of many heritage breeds. I mean, there must be Some reason that silkies exist!

Well, it's good to know that others are seeing variability in the comb size at this age. I only have the two females from the Easter hatch so I can only compare them to each other. The RC Brown Leghorn from that hatch has definitely grown some wattles as well. Still, I'm not sure. We'll see.
