Euthanasia questions

Would WD40 work?

I don't think there's ether in there, so it wouldn't.

I would say no. WD40 is a lubricant. Please - if this is a pet that you love, spend the extra bit and take her to a vet if you can't do it quickly and humanely. In my opinion, suffocating an animal is neither.

Just letting you know that it's the CO2 method (aka baking soda and vinegar) that suffocates birds to death, which is horrible and I don't think anyone should do. Using ether just knocks them out and then kills them in their sleep. They don't know what happened. Vets used to use it as an anesthetic before we developed safer ones that are less prone to overdosing the animal, but in this case, an overdose is what you want.

Not saying not to take the bird to a vet, if they have the money, just that ether doesn't suffocate the birds.

The vet is not an option like you said. WD-40 contains 10% ether. Is it enough?

Truthfully, the broomstick method will be best, and much faster for both you and the bird. And it will not botch up, like a homemade chemistry lab is apt to do.

I would suggest wrapping the bird and securing it in a towel, as birds tend to flap in the death throws, and while the bird does not feel, it is just the extra electricity flowing out of the body, it is upsetting to the person doing the deed. Wrapping her securely will help.

I am advocate of the broom stick method, quick and over.

Im really sorry you have to go through this,
If I where you I would take her to the local vet I know it coasts a lot of money but I couldn't do it when I had to put mine down.

Ditto Dat!!^^^
It's the only CD video I've found that doesn't remove the head.

**Notice the slight divot in the ground under the stick and neck, this will keep the bird from being choked.

**Notice that she slowly stretches out the neck and legs before giving the short sharp jerk that breaks the neck close to the skull, this is key to success IMO.

I've found this technique to be very effective.

**Key points that will make things go much better.

Okay heres how it went:
It was a complete mess.
We sprayed a libral amount of the starting fluid(it had 40% ether which was the highest we could find) into the container and quickly placed her in and closed it. I came back out 45 minutes later to check. She was still alive(though in a hallucinogenic state) we ended up just using the broom stick method at that point but either we didnt do it right or it was just her nerves but she started flapping around like crazy and in the moment we used the hatchet which did her in. I dont know what went wrong.
