Euthanizing our first dog questions

I agree that a whole lot of vets take full advantage of people. I use to go to a certain vet office and it was great, small nice place with two great vets and wonderful staff. The last time I went they have built a HUGE new office that would rival a hospital, hired a bunch of new vets and staff. No doubt they made and are making the money to pay for that place off of people who have put the value of animals even with and sometimes above the value of people. A lot of us have got to where we will pay any price to "fix" our pets and the vets have taken full advantage of that. That and there are the animal right crowd who try to shame you if you don't treat and care for your dog/cat/rat like it is one of your children. During the winter I am always amazed by the weathermen/weatherwomen on the local TV station who warn people to "bring their animals inside because it is going to get down to freezing tonight!!". Ohh my gosh, where will I put the cows!?!?!?! How on earth am I going to round up the deer!?!?!?!? Get real - they are animals, they have fur, God made them that way for a reason! Pardon me, the world has gone crazy and it just gets to me now and then. But yes I am guilty too of putting more money and feelings into my animals than I should too. The vets are making the most of it.

I'm really sorry about your dog. I have cried my eyes out over a many.

Thank you everyone. Well, after calling every vet in town and all of them requiring a physical and consult with the vet, we went out of town to do it. This office just asked a few questions and was much more polite and understanding. Sad day :(

I'm sure you made the right decision. Sorry and a hug to you. :(

It may be that the vet just wants to make sure that you are not putting your dog down because you don't want it anymore. I know that people do that and I think it sucks! If, however, it is the vet that has been treating your dog you should not need to have a check up done to have your dog put down! When I had to have my cat put down it was because the vet said that there was nothing that could be done for my baby. I cried for days and I still miss him! I had him cremated and what I got back was a baggie with some of his fur, a tin with his ashes, a candle and a paw print. I understand your pain and I wish you happy memories.
When you do have your dog put down please be there if at all possible. I, personally could not leave my cat alone while the vet put him down. I had to be there. He didn't die immediately. I know this because they brought him out to me after he received the shot and I held him until he was gone. I knew he was gone when he peed on me. I think I held him in my arms for another hour before I let them take him from me. When I got his ashes and saw the baggie of fur I cried my eyes out. I still miss him to this day!

if the dog hasn't been seen by a vet (or the vet you are asking to do the procedure), a quick physical and consult are going to be normal. I would actually be worried about a vet who said "sure bring him in" and didn't ask any questions.

It's sad how many people will put a dog to sleep for health problems that are actually easily treated.

He had heart problems, liver and kidney issues, arthritis, and deteriorating hair, skin and nails. He was in horrible health and we had just seen the vet within the last two months. Same vet.

And we had seen the vet regularly and got the care that they suggested up until two months ago when we felt that his health was deteriorating too quickly. Like I said, he had outlived all of his family members. I truly believe that he was at the end of his life.
