I live in Florida. Hurricane Irma is headed right for me, and I am making plans in case I need to evacuate. I would be less stressed bringing my flock with me (as it is I will feel horribly guilty having to leave behind our fish), and today I learned that the restrictions on intrastate travel with poultry have been temporarily lifted to allow for evacuations.

I have nine standard-sized hens to transport. I also have three small dogs and four humans to transport, likely in the same vehicle but splitting into two vehicles may be a possibility. How do I safely and securely fit chickens into our evacuation plans and what supplies do I need for them? (Evacuating with dogs I can do in my sleep. I've never had to evacuate poultry before!)

Luckily they're already accustomed to nipple drinkers, so it shouldn't be too hard to affix some travel bottles with nipples attached. Feed may be trickier in the van, but I can probably use travel bowls like for dog food, right?

I'm not sure how much yard space I'll have for them where we're going. It depends where we end up; I'll have to secure them in the van overnight because nothing I can temporarily set up will be safe overnight or unsupervised.

9 shouldn't be bad. A dinhle large cage or two if needed can house them at least for transport....larger containment for once you are where you are going. Feed and water (containers for eavh as well) and if you don't already have an emergency/ first aid kit for the animals this is a good time to assemble one

Emergency/medical kit is all set. I'll double-check it before we leave. I have no idea how long we would be gone for, hopefully not more than a week, but you never can tell with hurricanes. (I'm still holding on to ever-waning hope that Irma makes a hard right and ends up in the Atlantic, but big storms are not known for suddenly changing course.)
