Chickenchick -- I'm thinking they would need a "headstart" where you are. They are a pretty long day item. It's something like a 150-180 day growing season. I'm not sure how they would transplant, but you could always try to start them inside in a bright window in a LARGE pot.
The things love hot, muggy weather with plenty of rain. I would literally see a foot of growth some days. It was amazing to watch them tear down fences with their weight! (You better believe I planted fewer the next year.) We're talking welded wire fencing with tposts every 3-4 feet! They actually pulled it right down. They even weighted down chain link.
