hey there....
im sort of back and wanted to say hello!
moving was crazy and fun.... we are now on the island of KAUAI. the garden isle or as i like to call it " the CHICKEN isle" bc there are wild chickens EVERYWHERE!! i LOVE IT! i think i even saw an REAL araucana rooster - or he had all his tail tail feathers pulled out! im going back to where i saw him for a night mission to find him and take him home with me! i am so soo close to getting my 8 acre farm!!
and i talked to the county yesterday to find out how many chooks i can have at my house in a neighborhood, and they said 4 poultry is the the max. no specifications on sex. so i can have a rooster if i want or even 4 peafowl lol - the size does not matter, which i think is a bit funny, bc they are huge and loud!! i want some!
and we thought our last neighbors didnt like us! wait until i have a roo in my backyard! hard for anyone to really complain bc there are a few wild ones in the neighborhood. and hundreds more on the island. i dont have any chooks right now
but soon i hope! i am almost going to make an order from a hatchery on the mainland for some. out of these few who will ship here do any of yall have any reviews for me so i can make my decision.
1. Murray McMurray - has ALL the basic dual purpose breeds i want, EE and my cochin bantams and frizzles! - no welsummers
2. Estes - has SOME of the basic dual purpose breeds i want Plus they have Welsummers which i want - no bantams though
3. Meyers - has most/ALL of the basic dual purpose breeds i want plus the Welsummers - not really any of the bantams i want
4. and then theres Ideal who has mostly everything i want and i would order from them except they are SOLD OUT ON EVERYTHING until JUNE!!
so out of the top 3 - who would you go with - taking into consideration that i am in HAWAII so they will have to be shipped quite a ways??
then in june i think i will make another order from ideal or if i really like whoever we get the 1st batch from maybe them again?
also i was thinking of ordering all my pullets and the bantys from McMurray and then get my Roosters and the welsummers from Meyers - i want to breed my chickens eventually (not for show) but just for more chooks and meat/eggs. so i was thinking it would be good to get the roos from another hatchery?? so when i breed them eventually they arent all directly related possibly?? im not sure if that matters too much? thats why im here, lol! i know for some breeding you breed the daughters back to the father roo and whatever - im not that good or involved just yet - but i really want to learn!
I almost passed out at the grocery store when i paid $7.99 plus tax for a doz. local eggs!!
when i moved from big island and sold all my chooks i was just starting to get a dozen eggs a day!! OMG!
and just a quick tidbit for you all - gas is $4.21 a gal. for regular! i need to get my chooks ASAP!!!
i guess bc there are hundreds of wild chickens around that makes the price of eggs go up?!
well i hope all is well in the chicken lands around the world!! i have really missed chatting with you all these last few weeks! we are finally almost unpacked and back online!
now its time to start working on getting the farm going!
ALOHA for now
