Everyone Keeps Getting Sick! Is it the eggs?!

Avandrie think of it this way - leave your eggs in the fridge for 4 months and they will be just like store bought.

Only wash if they have poop on them. The bloom DOES protext the egg from outside bacteria that would otherwise seep in the egg.

Like Debi said, don't wash them. Eggs are like a sponge and will absorb anything that's on them. I keep a little bucket of fine sand handy and if there is a poop overload on an egg I will "wash" it with the sand. The sand will scrub the egg clean without scratching it up or damaging it. This is what I do to my hatching eggs, the eating eggs just stay like they are.

I had a bit of "mental block" myself, but it came down to not trusting myself as much as the food industry. It's not exactly logical, but the grocery store eggs are all nice and perfect. Good food rarely looks all nice and perfect...garden food, fruit trees from the backyard, or poopy chicken eggs. Yet I know how my chickens are raised, I know that they're happy, and I know mine are fresher than store eggs.

I don't know about the nutrition side, but I know mine taste better and hold up better in cooking than grocery eggs.

So I don't think about the whole butt issue anymore.

Now if I could get past the goat milk thing....

Listen, I raise sheep (don't eat sheep meat), chickens (don't eat chicken OR eggs), turkeys (eat butterball only), I deer hunt (don't eat the meat), I fish (don't eat the meat) and I want a beef cow to raise for slaughter, but my husband said it would just die of old age like everything else around here does LOL!!!! It's my mother's fault because she wasn't oudoorsy and didn't let us eat anything unless it came from the grocery store and the older I get, the worse I am about it too.

Thank you to everyone for your opinions - and I certainly welcome more. I think what's caused the extended "mental block" on eating the eggs is the digestive issues afterwards - for me anyways.

I'm weird though - perhaps the weirdest on this forum. For example: When I eat cereal... if I hit a piece that's got an extra crunch - like an uncooked (or over cooked) piece of something.. I get close to almost losing it at the table. It's incredibly annoying and slightly embarrassing.

I will admit that it took me a while to start eating the eggs I gathered from the coop. And I went to an Aggie school back when they had chickens for meat and eggs. It isnt like I dont know about all that.

But after making that first omlet. OMG I love em.
Right now I have cin bread in the over made with fresh eggs. And we have eggs salad at least once a week. Will be making pickled eggs shortly as well.

However. I can not and will not eat one of the girls. If it gets as bad as some are predicting I am going to get some meat birds. But will have to find someone else to process them. And then I am still going to have issues unless they de bone the breast meat as well. Again. I went to an Aggie. I know how to do all this, but just cant. And yes. I get teased without mercy for this

Are you eating more eggs than you normally would since you have easy access to them? Eggs do cause gas and can constipate you.
What kind of feed do you give them?

If the eggs are clean, put them in the fridge without washing - if they are very dirty wipe them off with a damp towel and put them in the fridge - you won't have a problem.

After reading your above post about the cereal - me thinks it's a mental block!

The sand "scrub" sounds the best option to me... I've read that we should use very fine grit sandpaper to remove any yuckyness from the eggs..

but.. I rinse off anything myself at this point.. no eggs are lasting more than a week around here yet. And I find it easier to keep adding hay to the nest boxes... eggs always come out cleaner when the nest boxes are fresh.
