Everyone Please be aware of Raccoons!!

I lost geese years ago to 2 raccoons working together...they are nasty and I now have enclosed night pen, surrounded by a 4 ft fence with hotwire top and bottom.

Good that you rebuilt and are not giving up but you have to make sure you are doing all you can now that you KNOW you have predators and how violent they are. Putting more geese in your yard would only sentance them to death if you don't protect them right.

Do you only keep them in that at night, right?? What do you do with them during the day - how are they safe??? The bin is awefully small and a bobcat or basically anything can dig under or knock it over as they are scaring the @)(#*$ out of the geese and there is all that comotion since it's right there on the ground and they are right there at the screen grabbing and nashing at them. The geese panic, whatever it is is pawing at them and cage turns over or bobcat/racoon/etc. jumps on top of it and falls through into there with them.

How horrible that attack and the poor gander died a violent death. Got to get another gander for your goose though, she'll go into depression quickly.

How about putting the "goose bin" closer to the house or on the porch or right next to the back door??? Put a top on it something heavy but not too heavy or bolt it to the side of the house...cover it with something to block light or shade them a bit at night so they can sleep but leave sides open for air/etc. I would stil lworry about predators coming up to the cage and scaring the )@#)*@#$ out of them. I would hate to be in that cage in a yard at night knowing there is a bobcat/racoon killer who ate my friend out there and have him come right up to the cage where I am and be nashing and grabbing at me (whether he can get through now or not).

You've got to get your other goose another friend or re-home it with other geese. Lone goose is not good but you don't want to have a "repeat event" either so think about it in terms of the predator from their point of view coming up into your yard at night or day even. And, think about it in terms of what your goose / geese are seeing and experiencing... might give you some different ideas on how to protect your animals and the geese as well.

Chicken wire is good for nothing other than arts and crafts.
