WOW! Same thing happened to me this weekend!! The chickens were supervised free ranging in the woods on our neighbors property. There are several properties, all about 1-2 acres abutting a large wood. We are a rura l'subdivision' and every neighbor (there is one to the right, 2 to the left) on either side of me has given permission for the chooks to wander in their part of the woods and yards. It keeps down the bugs and everyone likes them. No problem, I have great neighbors.
My BF was out raking/blowing/burning leaves as was every one of my neighbors on Sunday. My BF then comes running into the house saying he heard a bb gun from the woods and one of the chooks was hit. I fly out of the house and see all the chooks running back to the coop and poor Gerty limping badly, trying to keep up. I scoop her up and she was hit in the leg but it only tore the skin a bit and it was bruised. I took her to all the neighbors who, because of the leaf blowers they were using (we rake) didn't hear it. They were very concerned. The bbs could have hit any of us since the chickens were foraging right by everyone, looking under the leaves as we put them in piles.
One said that they had seen some kids back in the woods a week or two ago. Now, behind the woods is a creek and some more woods and then it connects with a dirt road that comes off one of the other roads in the town. This road is not paved and I've been down there to look for my kitty once (she came home on her own!) and it was, errr, a little...ummm. Scary. Like every stereotype you might think of...dirty kids with no shoes, singlewides on blocks and as many cars on them too, dogs chained to tires. Everyone coming out on their porch and eyeing my truck as it went by....
Well, I'm thinking it was some kids that came through the woods from there. There is no way I'm going to go over there and start knocking on doors. I'm worried though. I was so mad afterwards, wanted to get my .308 and show them what it felt like to get shot at...then I calmed down and thought about it. I'm just watching and waiting right now. God help the little buggers if I ever catch them because there will be hell to pay, a little ride in a police car and I'll probably have to deal with some idiot parent sticking up for the brat and telling me it was just what happens out in the country, it's just a chicken, blah, blah, blah.
The chicken was shot on my neighbor's property and had permission to be on it so it's as good as being shot in MY yard. I pray this is just an isolated incident.
